Warwick Chess

Warwick Chess is the official Chess Society of the University of Warwick, proudly sponsored by Optiver and ChessPick. We are a non-profit student organisation with over 180 members and a 21-member executive committee, dedicated to making chess accessible and rewarding for players of all levels through competitive and social opportunities. Warwick Chess has a long and distinguished competitive history. We are four-time British Universities Team Champions, having won the title in 2002, 2017, 2018, and 2022. Since 2017, Warwick has consistently fielded the highest number of teams among all competing universities. At a local level, we field five teams in the Coventry & District Chess League (CDCL), spanning beginner to Master level. Warwick Chess has been crowned CDCL Champions dozens of times, most recently in 2022, 2024, and 2025. Our competitive outreach extends beyond university and local leagues. Warwick Chess participates in the World Chess League and the Collegiate Chess League, competing against institutions from around the world. We also organise termly trips to events such as the Birmingham Rapidplay, where Warwick players consistently secure prizes across multiple sections. Warwick Chess organises the annual Warwick Rapidplay, the largest student-run chess tournament in the UK, which attained the ECF Congress of the Year title in 2023. Alongside competitive chess, we host weekly Clubnights every Thursday (7:30–10:00 pm) in the Oculus Building (OC0.02). In addition, we run weekly training sessions, host Grandmaster simultaneous exhibitions, invite speakers, and organise a wide range of social events, trips, and football matches. We are committed to inclusivity and outreach. The Society runs fortnightly Women’s Clubnights. Through our “Chess in Schools” volunteering initiative, members teach chess in local schools.
