Whale Interpretive Centre
The Whale Interpretive Centre (WIC) opened in 2002 and was the largest public collection of marine mammal skeletons in Western Canada. This land-based interpretive centre was one of the recommendations of the Johnstone Strait Killer Whale Committee, co-chaired by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and BC Parks. The objective of the Whale Interpretive Centre is to provide information to the public for increased awareness of the biology, habitat needs and threats to local marine mammals. The WIC was a cornerstone in marine education, serving northern Vancouver Island and its national and international visitors for 22 years. Sadly, on December 31, 2024, the Whale Interpretive Centre and all its contents were destroyed by a fire in the historic community of Telegraph Cove. Our Board of Directors have committed to rebuilding the Whale Interpretive Centre and continuing our public education goals. Your support enables to us rebuild and allows us to continue our school education programs, fund the articulations of new marine mammal skeletons, and strengthen stewardship for the ocean and its inhabitants.
