I punched a wall. Yep, that’s right. When I got off the phone with the Pharma team who explained in detail what chemo treatment for my stage 2 breast cancer would entail, I was so heartbroken and felt so betrayed by my body that I punched a wall. I wasn’t angry. I was hurt. I experienced all the milestones of cancer treatment: chemo, reconstruction surgeries, radiation, scans, and lab tests. Through it all, I learned so much about the treatment process, the healthcare system, and most importantly, about myself. Strange as it sounds, cancer was the best thing that ever happened to me. Everyone’s experience is different, but for me, cancer became a launching point for a transformed life, and it shaped a new perspective super-charged with gratitude and joy. The highly qualified teams who helped me through the treatment have never entered the chemo room for the first time, grappling with fear of an unexpected diagnosis. They work really hard to make it a pleasant and build community, but they’ve never been on the other side of that chemo port. That’s why I became a volunteer in the very place where I received my chemo treatment. I felt compelled to return and help the folks who are experiencing cancer/chemo for the first time. Volunteering inspried me to create What Next Wellness, LLC. Coaching and mentoring cancer patients, their families and even their employers to better understand the journey enabling both a soft landing and a positive launch to their new life. There is a gap between receiving medical treatment and the emotional crisis that begins the day of your diagnosis leading to a wide variety of thoughts that are led with a negative and fear-based approach. I understand, but also found a way to allow cancer to introduce the greatest sense of living powered by a peaceful approach. My program delivers the tools needed to live a harmonious life without being attached to “What if” and more so excited about “What Next”.
