Wooleen Station

Wooleen Station is a hectare pastoral lease located in the Shire of Murchison, 700kms north east of Perth. Originally established in 1886 by the Sharpe family Wooleen Station is now owned by the Pollock family and operated by David and Frances Pollock. Once a sheep property, the station transitioned into cattle in 2006 and has operated a Station Stay since 1993 to supplement their pastoral income. In 2007 the station was completely destocked of domesticated animals to try and rehabilitate degraded lands and find sustainable ways to run cattle into the future. The property was recognised for this undertaking through 4 episodes of ABC’s Australian Story. Sustainable and environmental use of the land is at the forefront of what makes Wooleen Station such a unique and special property. The Wooleen Homestead is located next to the Wooleen Lake, a Nationally Important Wetland. This lake fills on average once every 9 years and forms an integral habitat for many migratory birds, crustaceans, frogs, fish and turtles. Wooleen is renowned for its numerous granite outcrops which rise up out of the landscape. The rocks are dated by geologists at around 3.6billion years old and form part of the oldest landscape on earth. 37kms of Roderick River and 36kms of Murchison River flow through the property. In spring after substantial winter rains, the countryside comes alive with one of the biggest wildflower displays on earth, including everlastings acacias, eremophilas, native hibiscus, cassias, grevilleas and more attract the keenest of botanists. All of these landscape features join to make Wooleen Station one of the most important areas for the local Yamaji Wajarri people. Wooleen Stations tourism enterprise aims to cultivate a deeper understanding of our environment and connection to country. Guests come to Wooleen Station to experience the vast open spaces, diverse flora and fauna and resilient landscape – it’s an amazing place to watch mother-nature at work.
