Word Tree Consulting was founded in 2018 by Dr. Jacquilyn Weeks, who earned her PhD in English from the University of Notre Dame and spent 10 years teaching award-winning classes at the university level. She was having lunch with a cousin who works at a major national laboratory, and the cousin said,"You know, I love my job, but I really hate all the writing. Getting the results is amazing, but publishing them is a nightmare." Jacqui laughed and said,"No problem! Buy me lunch, and I'll fix your writing." This casual interaction launched a whole business concept, because achieving breakthrough science and explaining breakthrough science are fundamentally different skillsets. Word Tree was designed to empower scientists to share their work with the wider community, not just by fixing grammar, but by helping scientists to understand and employ PhD-level narrative patterns. At present, Word Tree has long-term contracts to support PhD-level science writing at three national laboratories and Word Tree offers short-term, single-project writing support for hundreds of individual scientists and scientific teams around the globe. In addition, Dr. Weeks has developed an extremely popular series of live workshops for PostDocs and career scientists that have now gone virtual in response to the pandemic. WHY: We believe that, if we are to advance as a human community, brilliant science must reach the audience where it will have the most impact.
