Zumwalt Acres

We are working to transition the Zumwalt family conventional row crop farm to an agroforestry-based model of regenerative agriculture in East-Central Illinois. This includes perennial farming, mushroom cultivation, and organic horticulture. We are also using dead trees on-site to produce biochar which is then mixed with compost and soil to apply to the land in order to capture carbon and increase soil health. We are producing systematic field-based studies on enhanced mineral weathering with crushed basalt rock to better understand how this practices can mitigate climate change and improve soil health in the midwest and beyond. Cultivating an inclusive community, grounded in Jewish values, with people who are committed to building a better food system, is central to what we do.
