The bank started operations on 28th July 2009. Its shareholding structure comprises 97% Government and 3% private individuals and entities. Women entrepreneurs sent their request to the government of Tanzania requesting an establishment of an institution that would understand the special and unique challenges which women face when accessing banking services. Also the establishment would be an opportunity for the bank to become a dominant Tanzanian player in this sector. FOCUS TWB is committed to expand its focus to Group Microfinance, to segments of individual microfinance, Small and Medium Enterprises with more emphasis on women customers. In light of this, TWB products have been tailored to accommodate even those that are rejected by other financial service institutions and hence marking the difference between us and others. Bank of Tanzania (BOT) issued a provisional license to China Dasheng Bank on 25 November 2017 that granted approval to carry out banking business as a commercial bank subject to fulfillment of the conditions set forth by the BOT. OUR PEOPLE, OUR SOURCE OF FRESH THINKING AND SMART BANKING The Bank commenced operations in 1996 as an asset financing institution under the joint ownership of CDC Capital Partners (CDC), International Finance Corporation (IFC), TDFL and the Union Dominions Corporation (UDC). Following the merger of UDC with First Merchant Bank and BARD Investment Services, and the subsequent re-branding as African Banking Corporation, ABC Holdings Limited (ABCH) listed on the Botswana (primary) and Zimbabwe (secondary) Stock Exchanges. The Bank in Tanzania was granted full commercial banking status by the Bank of Tanzania in 2002. In 2004, the ABCH Group successfully concluded the acquisition of a 68% interest in Tanzania Development Finance Company Ltd (TDFL) from the existing international shareholders, i.e. IFC, CDC, DEG, FMO and EIB. The Government of Tanzania has remained a key shareholder (32%) in TDFL. The operations of Capital Finance Limited, the operating arm of TDFL were merged with the Bank. BancABC operated as a merchant bank since 2002 and introduced retail banking operations in 2008. The Bank opened its first branch in March 2010 and aims to rollout more branch outlets in various parts of the country. BancABC now offers a full bouquet of banking services for its corporate and personal customers.

Tanganyika Postal Office Savings Bank (TPOSB) now Tanzania Commercial Bank came into being in 1925 when Tanganyika was under British Rule. It later became a Savings Bank under the then East African Post and Telecommunications which ceased to operate after the collapse of the East African Community. The Tanzania Posts & Telecommunications Corporation (TP & TC) came into being to cater for the Tanzanian market. TPB was formed from the now defunct TP & TC. TPB was established by the Tanzania Postal Bank Act No. 11 of 1991. On Monday the 29th of June 2015, the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania repealed the Act and on the 29th of March 2016 the bank was incorporated under the Companies Act (Cap 212) as TPB Bank PLC. On Thursday 19th January 2017, the bank unveiled it’s the name TPB Bank PLC to the public as well as its new logo and tagline (Grow with us). On the 14th July 2021 the bank changed its name to Tanzania Commercial Bank Plc with a tagline ‘Growing stronger together
