Project Sentinel

SENTINEL aims at developing a minimally invasive and biocompatible implantable biosensor to be used in the early tumor surveillance in post-operative prostate cancer patients. Placed under the user’s skin, the sensor allows optical readout of the patient’s disease state using a portable probe, which acquired signals are then analysed using machine learning algorithms to infer the disease status. The SENTINEL consortium is led by Stemmatters with co-promoters from the North region of Portugal (INL, ICVS and 2CA) and an international partner (University of Texas at Austin). The funding of SENTINEL projects is funded by UT Austin Portugal Program.

In conjunction with a specially-developed App, the smartphone’s built-in camera detects a whole range of analytes, including bacteria, viruses and other molecules. Images are cross-referenced in real-time against our proprietary and interactive image database. EzLab Systems develops new ways to use mobile phones and tablets to collect images for medical, scientific, environmental and educational purposes. ALGICEL was created within the industry and the university as a way to gather and combine these two different worlds, thereby enhancing mutual understanding in order to generate value in the field of biotechnology. From this symbiosis two patents were originated and a start-up to an industrial unit dedicated to the intensive production of microalgae among which stands out Haematococcus pluvialis that is the living organism with the greater capacity for the production of Astaxanthin. This substance belongs to the group of xanthophylls carotenoids and it’s a natural pigment used for example for muscle colouring in salmon from aquaculture. It has been growing in importance and commercial interest due to its properties, particularly the high antioxidant activity, but also other attributes of pharmaceutical order, nutritional and cosmetic. ALGICEL has also developed technology dedicated to microalgal growing such as photobioreactors and various other accessories. ALGICEL specialized in the process of phase separation solid / liquid in aqueous medium rich in microalgae and cyanobacteria and consequently has developed technologies to clean up polluted eutrophic inland water bodies (water that is too rich in nutrients and organic matter with increasing primary productivity). ALGICEL took advantage of the true natural laboratory that constitutes the Azores Islands lakes which are suffering from this environmental problem.

Ubq Laboratórios Farmacêuticos

A UBQ (Unidade de Bioquímica) é uma microempresa sediada na Região Autónoma da Madeira que está a posicionar-se no mercado das biotecnologias azuis, dedicando-se á produção de extratos naturais, obtidos a partir de macroalgas marinhas, que parte de uma iniciativa do Dr. João Dionísio, de retomar o trabalho dos Laboratórios Farmacêuticos Zior, do Dr. Rodrigues Dionísio. O trabalho deste investigador, nos anos 70, séc. XX, permitiu o desenvolvimento de várias fórmulas galénicas com o propósito de combater as carências nutricionais na população madeirense. Estas fórmulas utilizavam plantas medicinais e algas marinhas, e permitiam a bio fortificação com iodo, cálcio e outros minerais. A UBQ é presentemente copromotora em conjunto com a Universidade da Madeira do projeto BPMA, financiado pelo programa +conhecimento, que visa a bioprospecção e produção de macroalgas marinhas para a produção de extratos naturais.
