AfrikaQueer+ is the brainchild of Johannesburg-based designers Vee Motingoa and Steffen Fischer. Born from a university outreach project developed in 2021 (“Thuthuzela” – Greenside Design Center) that aimed to interrogate the UN's Sustainable Development Goals concerning safe queer spaces within the South African context. From 2022 forward, AQ+ aims to expand on this thinking by interrogating queer issues through the design lens. As a design studio, we focus on design interventions and collaboration with other organisations to push the greater agenda – visibility, sustainability, and safety for queer communities.

The gathering point for these modern-day knights isn't a round table, but rather a table in the center of Andre van Pletzen's hardware and decor store, The Interior Shop. Here, they come together to protect their "kingdom" from plunder and decay. Just as Nehemiah rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem in record time, this group has brought a message of hope, igniting a desire within their community to clean up in front of their homes and businesses. Thus, a community can save a town, and in doing so, impact a nation.
