Paint Rock Forest Research Center
Research at the Paint Rock Forest Research Center is creating a new vision for forests in North America. In partnership with universities in Alabama and nationally, we are building a research program and campus that attracts researchers and attention from around the globe. Why here? Alabama is the center of forest and water diversity nationally. Northeast Alabama is the national center of deciduous forest diversity and a hotspot for forest endemism. By most measures, a few hundred acres of Paint Rock forest have more tree diversity than hundreds of thousands of acres of Great Smokey Mountains forest. Who's involved? The nation’s top scientists— including our founders, the late E.O. Wilson from Harvard; Stephen Hubbell and Patty Gowaty, chairs of Evolutionary Biology at UCLA; and scientists from University of Georgia, Clemson University and University of Vermont. The research program On a stunning Nature Conservancy preserve in Paint Rock Valley, they’re measuring the depth and dimensions of Alabama’s riches in a way that’s never been done before. Over 150 acres, every woody stem larger than a pencil is identified, carefully measured and mapped, and will be tracked for decades. Companion research will probe the tens of thousands of unknown species in the soil, along with the remarkable diversity of wildflowers, insects, cave life, birds, amphibians, mammals, many of which are all but unknown outside of Northeast Alabama. The fact that these forests are so much richer than forests elsewhere is telling us something very important about the nature of Alabama: It may well hold the keys to the future of forests and life throughout North America. A new generation of researchers We recognize that the only way to appreciate the diversity of Alabama is to see it with the eyes of diversity. Alabama’s underserved teens, regardless of race and cultural background, will have a chance to work with the nation’s top scientists.
