Educating Children
Educating Children aims to assist teachers, therapists, madrichim and parents in the process of educating children. Each child has the ability to reach their full potential and it is up to us as educators to help them achieve this. Children are like plants. Each child is innocent, young human beings with clear minds just like a seed of a plant. When one plants a seed one needs to look after the seed by watering it, feeding it and ensuring it gets enough sun to grow. So too, children need to be nurtured, loved and cared for to ensure that their needs are met in order for them to want to grow. As the seed grows, it develops a strong root which secures its growth into a stem. These roots are developed by creating a secure and stimulating environment for the children to learn in. The seed then grows into a long beautiful green stem. Each child in their own way also develops into a stem by connecting and making meaning through what they have been taught. This is done by asking questions and receiving answers. The stem then forms a bud which forms into a magnificent flower. The children form into a bud by taking what they have learnt and create their own opinions of it. They then develop into flowers by being confident and happy individuals. We, as educators, are therefore proud of the knowledge we have provided to that plant that has formed. The children have learnt about who they are, where they have come from, morals and values and most importantly they have the ability and desire to enquire and learn more. “Children are born with wings and teachers help them to fly”

We’ve all been to school and know the feeling that once we get through it, we think we know, or even don’t know, what profession to study towards. The pressure that high school students undergo in order to pick the right profession for their skills is immense. So many times, students choose to study a profession that their parents tell them to study or that their peers think is right for them. Do they actually know what they are committing to for the rest of their career? With the amount of money that tertiary education costs parents (or the students themselves or companies offering bursaries), it’s probably a better option to have more of an idea of what one is getting into – because the general idea is that one studies what they will pursue once they complete their tertiary education. What if you have the wrong idea of what a career in law, or advertising, for example, offers? Do you have an understanding of what a typical day is like? What if there was an opportunity for a high school student to spend a day at a company that specialises in their supposed preferred field?
