Vuonna 1957 perustettu HNS on Suomen vanhin suomenkielinen navigaatioseura. Seuran tarkoituksena on luoda ja edistää merenkulun harrastusta, kehittää ja ylläpitää jäsentensä merenkulun turvallista osaamista sekä toimia yhdyssiteenä harrastelija- ja ammattimerenkulkijapiirien välillä. Tänä päivänä seuraan kuuluu noin pääkaupunkiseutulaista huviveneilijää, joita yhdistää halu ylläpitää perinteisiä navigointitaitoja ja edistää turvallista vesilläliikkumista. Seuraan voi liittyä, kunhan on suorittanut vähintään saaristolaivuritutkinnon tai omaa vastaavat tiedot. Seuran jäsenyys avaa oven ympärivuotiseen koulutukselliseen ja aktiiviseen yhteisölliseen toimintaan ja osallistumiseen seuran eri toimikuntiin, joita ovat mm. koulutus, veneenhoito, Kotiluoto, laivuri, matkavene, katsastus, tiedotus, toimisto- ja taloustoimikunnat. Toisaalta seuran jäsenyys tarjoaa mahdollisuuden rentoutumiseen Helsingin edustan rantasaunassa arkikiireiden keskellä. Seuran toiminnan kulmakivet muodostavat turvallisen vesilläliikkumisen perusteet eri merialueilla opettavat teoreettiset saaristo, rannikko- ja avomerilaivurin navigaatiokurssit, käytännön veneilykurssit ja harjoitusajot Navis V koulutusaluksella, Jollaksen vieressä sijaitseva saaritukikohta Kotiluoto rantasaunoineen sekä jäseniä palveleva toimisto Puotilan venekerhon rannassa. Seuran palvelutarjontaan kuuluvat myös erilaiset teemaillat sekä vierailut, veneiden katsastaminen sekä jäsenlehti.
