מערכת מן השדה מספקת מסגרת סטנדרטית לאיסוף נתונים בפעילויות חוץ אקדמיות, כלומר: למידע שלא נאסף במסגרת מחקר סדור ואף שלא על ידי חוקרים. היא פותחה במטרה לשתף את הציבור באיסוף מידע בנושא מגוון המינים. המידע הנאסף באמצעות רשתות האינטרנט והסלולר, עובר בקרה והתאמה לפורמטים ולסטנדרטים הדרושים לשילובו במסדי הנתונים הרשמיים. כך, מנוצלים היתרונות שבדיגום רציף ורחב היקף למטרות חינוכיות ואקדמיות גם יחד. כיום, מידע המדווח מהציבור כמעט ואינו בא לידי ביטוי במאגרים הרשמיים, בין היתר בגלל קשיים טכניים באימות וארגון המידע. מן השדה מתגברת על קשיים אלה ומאפשרת לציבור לקחת חלק פעיל בפעילות האיסוף. במן השדה מותקנת מערכת ניהול תוכן (CMS - Content Management System) מתקדמת מסוג דרופל (7.0 (Drupa. זו תוכנת קוד פתוח (open source) נגישה ויציבה, הנתמכת בקהילת מפתחים עצומה. המערכת כוללת מעט מרכיבי css ו javascript- ובעיקרה כתובה בשפת PHP ושפות סקריפט צד-שרת אחרות, להגברת הנגישות למידע ואפשרויות עיבוד הפלט. המערכת מספקת קוד xhtml הזמין לאינטראקציה מיידית עם מסדי הנתונים (מסוג MySQL ). מן השדה אינה מהווה תחליף למערכת מידע גיאוגרפית.(GIS) תחת זאת, הנתונים נאספים ומאורגנים באופן המאפשר שילובם המיידי בכזו. בהצלבה עם נתוני המיקום הגיאוגרפי, חושף המבנה ההיררכי שינויים ותהליכים בשכיחות ותפוצת מינים. בהצלבה עם הנתונים האישיים של המשתמש, הוא מאפשר לו לעקוב אחר פעילותו, לאמת את ממצאיו, לעגן את התכנים גיאוגרפית ולשתף אותם בקהילה. בשיטה זו, לחוויותיהם וממצאיהם של תלמידים בטיול שנתי, בסיורים ועוד, תיתכן השפעה גם על הנעשה במישור האקדמי Wildisrael is a PPGIS (public participation GIS) for biodiversity.
