The Freshwater Trust
The Freshwater Trust is focused on using insight to solve problems at the intersection of water and the economy. By leveraging analytics, science, policy reform, and incentive-based solutions, we’re working to build and apply data-driven conservation solutions that scale. What we do: Using science, technology, policy and finance, we build and manage solutions that improve water quality and quantity. With data and 21st century tools and technologies, we enable smarter watershed management to happen faster and at a greater scale. We also employ our solutions on the ground, such as riparian restoration and groundwater replenishment, for the benefit of both watersheds and the plants, animals and people that rely on them. Why we do what we do: Rivers are the backbone of our country. Yet decades of treating a finite resource as infinite has had severe consequences. More than 2.3 billion people worldwide live in river basins that are under stress, and half the rivers and streams in America are unhealthy and not functioning as they should. There are deadly algae blooms and lead-contaminated drinking water, taps running dry, and agricultural industries and wildlife at risk. This is not sustainable. We must restore our waterways faster than we degrade them. How we do what we do: We’re pioneers of a new approach. “Quantified Conservation” is about using data and technology to ensure every restoration action taken translates to a positive outcome. First, we identify and prioritize restoration opportunities to maximize benefits for a watershed. Then, we work with willing landowners to restore habitat in key places, to adapt practices, or to keep more water in rivers and streams that need it. Along the way, we track how every action we take is making a difference for our freshwater resources, our wildlife and our communities.

The Horticultural Society Of New York
Founded in 1900, and incorporated in 1902, with J. P. Morgan, Louis C. Tiffany, and J.J. Phelps among its earliest members, the goal of the Horticultural Society was to further the love and knowledge of horticulture through informative monthly meetings, formal lectures and seasonal flower shows. Today, over 100 years later, we are still growing a community of urban gardeners. Our development reflects the changes in urban horticulture itself, from a focus on specimen plants and ornamental gardens viewed alone in their majestic beauty, to a holistic understanding that plants and gardens are inexorably linked to the health of people, wildlife and our environment. At The Hort, we recognize the inter-relatedness and complexity of the “green” issues in our city, and therefore the core of our efforts is to educate and inform across the spectrum. We still help New Yorkers know plants and gardens as aesthetic wonders, but now our programs and projects encompass urban farming, rooftop gardening, container vegetable production, bio-remediation, storm water abatement, landscape design, vocational training, horticultural therapy and environmental literacy. The Hort improves human life through horticulture-We create green spaces in all neighborhoods as a vital part of social infrastructure-We train people for jobs that grow and sustain green communities-We develop fresh approaches to improve New Yorkers’ health, well-being, and environment through horticulture.

The Peregrine Fund
The Peregrine Fund is responding to 21st Century conservation challenges with a new strategic plan based on the conviction of our founders—“we will succeed by using science to inform decisions and by not accepting failure as an option”—so that by the year 2050 we will have helped create a vision of success in which bird of prey populations and their ecosystems thrive; we have enriched the lives of local communities where we work and improved their future; we have earned the reputation and serve as global experts on birds of prey and their conservation; and raptors are valued by all humans. Our strategy stands upon three transformative outcomes: conservation, engagement, and capacity. Conservation will be achieved by preventing raptor extinctions, protecting areas of high raptor conservation value, and addressing landscape-level threats impacting multiple species. Engagement will be reached by inspiring people to value raptors and take action, serving as a catalyst for change, and investing in tomorrow’s conservation leaders. Capacity outcomes are centered on The Peregrine Fund’s capacity to apply our core values, promise, and guiding principles to complex conservation challenges. Capacity will be built by assembling the infrastructure, facilities and people, and raising sufficient funds to execute the actions needed to reach measurable, time-bound goals on an iterative five-year planning cycle.
