This is an EU funded project providing training for agricultural stakeholders in the development of agroforestry in the mountain and Mediterranean region The Agrof-MM project "Training in Agroforestry - Mediterranean - Semi-Arid Zones - Mountain" aims to- Train between 130 and 150 agricultural professionals in Europe and neighboring countries over a three year period - Improve and develop educational tools for training in sustainable agroforestry - Develop a unique agroforestry qualification program in each European country Agrof-MM both reinforces and complements the European project AgroFE, which was completed in December 2015. It extends the geographical boundaries of the AgroFE project to encompass the Mediterranean and the mountain areas, broadening the level of training and opening it up to new players. Agroforestry can be defined as the integration of woodland vegetation (trees, hedges etc.) to crops and / or livestock on the same land. Its environmental and economic benefits have been scientifically proven. These include: reduced use of inputs, carbon storage, improving soil fertility, erosion control, biodiversity stimulation, better management and protection of water resources and further reducing the cost of production. The training of agricultural stakeholders is fundamental to a new development of agroforestry practices in Europe. Educating is essential not only to publicize this mode of innovative production, but also to acquire new skills and knowledge necessary to master the art of agroforestry. The groups which the training programs will target are the following: students, farmers and future farmers, workers, teachers, instructors and agricultural consultants. The training resources will be distributed to the following: managers of training centers, schools and universities, managers of training systems in the regions and the state, officials of major professional organizations, NGOs and policymakers.

Honsem Traditional Fruits

Honsem Tradtional Fruits is genoemd naar het gehucht Honsem, gelegen op de plaats waar de gemeentes Boutersem, Hoegaarden, Bierbeek en Beauvechain samen komen. Met zijn lange en rijke geschiedenis is dit kleine plekje op de landkaart toch overal bekend om zijn sterke karakter. En dat willen we reflecteren in de producten die we bij Honsem Traditional Fruits aanbieden. Met een boomgaard die meer dan 100 variëteiten aan appels bevat, elk met hun eigen verhaal, smaak en textuur, willen we simpelweg het beste appelsap produceren dat op de markt beschikbaar is. Daarvoor waken we erover dat we verschillende variëteiten zorgvuldig mengen in beperkte oplage, zodat we de beste smaak kunnen garanderen. Verder worden appels enkel geplukt en nooit van de grond geraapt. Zo komen ze vers aan bij de pers en rest er ook nog wat voor de vele kramsvogels en koperwieken die elk najaar weer in grote getale naar de boomgaard afzakken. Naast appels, hebben we ook andere fruitrassen zoals peren, pruimen, krieken, kerse, frambozen, aalbessen en ander kleinfruit. De productie van appelsap is niet het enige doel van Honsem Traditional Fruits. De natuurboomgaard wordt immers volledig ecologisch beheerd, wat wil zeggen dat geen ekele pesticiden gebruikt worden en dat het terrein optimaal beheerd wordt om een zo groot mogelijke biodiversiteit te verkrijgen. De boomgaard is dan ook een mozaiëk van hoogstambomen, haagkanten met mei- en sleedoorn, poelen voor amfibieën, bramenkoepels en graslanden. Dit resulteert in ondermeer de aanwezigheid van verschillende broedvogels zoals geelgors, ringmus, braamsluiper en steenuil maar ook in een grote diversiteit aan insecten zoals het koevinkje en de kleine vuurvlinder en meer recent ook een van de meest spectaculaire zoogdieren van onze contreien: de das. Op deze manier bieden we heerlijk appelsap aan uit een natuurboomgaard die gewoon top is qua biodiversiteit. En daar zijn we fier op. Gezondheid!
