Phosphite Biostimulant Stewardship Group Pbsg
The Phosphite Biostimulant Stewardship Group (PBSG) was created by a group of like-minded biostimulant manufacturers. Our aim is to persuade the European regulators to allow the continued use of phosphite as a biostimulant, enabling subsequent EU registration under biostimulant regulations. Phosphite has been used as a biostimulant for many years. It is a well-established, cost effective, proven technology used by farmers across Europe on a wide range of crops. The PBSG is collaborating with the University of Nottingham and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) to research the mode of action of phosphite as a biostimulant. The new EC fertilising product regulation EC 2019/1009, which will apply in full in 2022, is groundbreaking for our industry in that it includes Biostimulants. However, during the procedure that led to the approval of the regulation, phosphite was specifically excluded from the possible components of fertilisers. We accept the position that phosphite has no direct nutritional value and that it is registered as an active ingredient under EC1107/2009 for plant protection products. However, as a substance with dual use potential in separate fertilising and plant protection products, it is not unique and should therefore not be excluded. Our position is that phosphite has a scientifically proven mode of action and has been demonstrated over many years to be an effective biostimulant with an important agronomic input across a wide range of crops in European countries. Phosphite is now one of the most researched and consistently performing biostimulants on the market today and should continue to be accessible to growers in the future. The PBSG is funded by its members and focuses on generating and communicating scientific evidence of phosphite’s efficacy as a biostimulant to retain its use for the benefit of European farmers.

Pro-Veg Seeds Ltd
Pro-Veg Seeds Ltd. is a British seed company based in Cambridge. The company distributes vegetable and speciality flower seeds to packet seed companies and professional growers in the UK, most of the other EU-countries, Scandinavia, the USA and Canada, Japan, South Korea, China, Southern Africa and the Maghreb Region. We source our seeds worldwide and distribute the products of more than 100 seed companies. Pro-Veg Seeds is known for its passion about new product development and the sourcing of niche products for special markets. In addition to the strong NPD-work in vegetables, we also focus on sourcing and trialing new sunflower varieties suitable for pots, as cut flowers or for the home garden and landscaping. Around 20 new lines of all types of sunflowers are screened each year on our trial ground. Our keen interest lies in developing areas of plant breeding that are not well supported by the larger seed companies. Thus, we also run our own breeding programmes in patio vegetables, broad beans and garden peas. Originally, our breeding work was focused on patio tomatoes. Now, it also covers mini cucumbers and peppers. The vegetable and flower varieties that are chosen by the Pro-Veg team have all been tested in our own inhouse trials as well as in professional grower and supplier trials. 400 – 450 varieties are tested and shown annually at our Cambridgeshire based Demonstration Garden which serves as a “living catalogue”. These varieties are on show to our customers during our Open Days which are held during late August each year.
