Organic Mandya
When our founder, Madhu Chandan, returned from the US to his hometown Mandya in 2014, he saw the condition of farmers and decided to do something about it. Soon Madhu realized chemical farming has ruined agriculture and we need to go back to our roots. He started talking to farmers explaining them how organic farming works — use of only natural means such as fertilizers obtained from cow dung, techniques such as crop rotation and mixed cropping, and biological pest control. After seeing the results, more and more farmers joined this impromptu group which led to the formation of Mandya Organic Farmers Co-operative Society. Every Monday we hold a free organic farming training session in Mandya (it’s a mix of various natural farming techniques — predominantly, Subhash Palekar’s Zero Budget Natural Farming). So far, thousands of farmers across India have come to learn how organic farming is done and you’d be glad to know, as of now, we have farmers under our co-op society! We procure the produce directly from these farmers and sell them through our chain of supermarkets in Bangalore. Our mission, in that sense, is threefold: a) help provide sustainable livelihoods to farmers, and b) offer 100% honest organic food to people, and c) make Mandya (to start with) chemical-free.

Pan Seeds was set up in the year 1975 as a single product company engaged in the production and marketing of Jute Seeds. About a decade later, the focus shifted to Rice Seeds as Eastern India was having the largest cultivated area under Rice in the country. The foray into Rice met with huge success simply because of the company's commitment to providing quality seeds to the farmers. The goodwill earned by the company over the years accelerated its growth in Rice seeds beyond expectations. This led the company to expand its market from West Bengal to other parts of Eastern India like Bihar, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh and Easten Uttar Pradesh. A large number of distributors are now engaged with the company in these areas. The strong network of distributors opened up opportunities in the marketing of Vegetable seeds, Wheat Seeds, Potato Seeds, Oil Seeds and Agriculture Hand Sprayers. At present, the business of rice seeds accounts for 65% of our turnover. It has an excellent future and tremendous growth potential especially with the large scale adoption of hybrid rice technology by the farmers to counter the stagnating yields of rice in the country. This technology is very important to India to avoid shortages and imports and become self sufficient in meeting its food requirements. The export market of Hybrid Rice also holds huge potential in our neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and also South East Asian countries which are predominantly rice growing countries. The balance 35 % of the business comprises of other crops like vegetable seeds, oilseeds, fibre crop seeds, wheat seeds, Potato seeds, and Agriculture Hand Sprayers.
