Growers Synergy Pte Ltd
Growers Synergy is working with PureCircle to develop a sustainable and consistent supply chain of quality Stevia leaves to be grown in South East Asia to meet the exploding demand for natural, zero calorie sweeteners. The stevia plant (stevia rebaudiana bertoni) is native to Paraguay, South America, where it has been used for hundreds of years. The stevia plant has a number of different glycosides that are sweet to the taste, but each glycoside has a different taste profile. Of the different glycosides present in the stevia plant, Rebaudiside A (Reb A), was isolated as having the closest taste profile to sugar. Because Reb A is similar to sugar in taste, and is extracted from a plant, it is quickly gaining attention for its potential commercial use as an all-natural, zero-calorie sweetener. In December 2008, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the acceptance of Reb A at 95 percent purity for use as a food ingredient in the United States (US). The announcement spurred a surge in interest in the use of Reb A in a wide range of products, such as fruit juices, enhanced waters and carbonated soft drinks (CSD). To meet this increasing demand, the stevia sector will need to rapidly expand stevia production and increase refining scale and efficiency, presenting attractive opportunities for large-scale producers to begin production.
