Institute of Science & Technology (IST) was established in 1993, the first Institute in Bangladesh conducting Honors in Computer Science affiliated with National University. It was founded by Prof. Dr. Shahida Rafique, University of Dhaka. Inaugurated in the presence of Nobel Laureate Professor Dr. Abdus Salam & by the then Honorable Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Marine Fisheries Academy
After liberation war of Bangladesh it was seen that it lacked skilled manpower for judicious exploitation and harvesting of marine fisheries resources. Thus the call for a national institution to train and educate personnel for Bangladesh maritime fisheries industries which began in 1972. The year was also the beginning of a rapid technological change in the deep sea fishing, with the introduction of large and sophisticated deep sea fishing vessels. Government realized that without skilled manpower i.e. qualified officers, growth of an efficient fishing fleet would be impossible. With that end in view on 1st September, 1973 Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh established Marine Fisheries Academy on a beautiful landscape on the southern bank of the river Karnaphuly, opposite to Sadarghat, Chittagong. Its geographical position is 22° 19.0' N latitude, 91° 49.8' E longitude and the campus is about 1 km from the city center. Since its inception Academy is shouldering the responsibilities of exploring and pooling the seafaring talents of the country and training them in well planned and well organized manner as Navigator, Engineer and Fish Processing Technologist. On completion of three years training in the academy qualified cadets are awarded with BSc(Honors) degree from National University and they officially complete their training through a colorful ceremony is called "Passing out Parade" which is normally held with the presence of Minister of Fisheries & Livestock. Cadets take oath to serve at sea with appropriate sincere effort. So, with an internationally accepted Pre-sea training certificate and a graduation from the National University the vast ocean and sea-door becomes open to them.

Mirzapur Cadet College
History of Mirzapur Cadet College: After the establishment of Faujderhat Cadet College in Chittagong district and Jhenaidah Cadet College in the Khulna division the foundation of Momenshahi Cadet College (former name of Mirzapur Cadet College) was planned. The objective of the new college was to prepare army officers for the Pakistan Army. East Pakistan period: The then president of Pakistan Field Marshal Ayub Khan laid the foundation stone of Momenshahi Cadet College at the Mirzapur Upazila in the then Mymensingh District (now Tangail district) of Bangladesh on 29 November 1963. The foundation stone is still there on the wall of the main academic building of the college. Major General Fazle Mukim Khan formally opened the college on 9 January 1965. The first principal was Mr. Michael William Pitt. Academic activities started from that year with intakes in Classes 7, 8 and 9. Liberation War period: After 7 March speech a violent procession by an angry mob entered the college campus on the 8th. Principal Wng Comd Sulaiman Haider Kayani closed the college then and sent all the cadets home. During the liberation war the college was opened in the first week of November 1971 with Mr Wahab as acting Principal. Bangladesh period: Each year at least 900 7th graders compete to earn the 50 seats available. Other cadet colleges were established. Today there are 12 cadet colleges, including three for girls only.
