In the Law approved CHUB to be autonomously managed. The National University of Rwanda’s laboratory was also transferred to CHUB. Team Heart, Inc, collaborating to build a cardiac surgery program in Rwanda with the Government of Rwanda Rwanda Heart Foundation. Rheumatic Heart Disease is prevalent in Rwanda and if untreated can be prematurely life-ending. Building a comprehensive center to increase public awareness and provide the training of human resources to diagnose and intervene to provide care needed. Rheumatic Diseases is most often the cause of untreated strep throat, a preventable and is considered to be a neglected disease in most developing countries. It is found in of children in the one population examined by echocardiogram. The world shares the same burden of congenital heart disease, however, in Rwanda it is largely undiagnosed. There is not a cardiac center for children and only 2 pediatric cardiologists for the population of children. The world recognizes children born with heart disease, however Rwanda does not have the facilities for diagnosis and intervention. There are no pediatric cardiologists and no surgeons in the country. In addition, as the western lifestyles creep to Rwanda and an increase in life expectancy, there will be an increase in coronary heart disease. At this time only two cardiologist can intervene and both are located in Kigali. Very few hospitals even have an EKG machine are someone to read.

Kabgayi Eye Unit Keu
The Kabgayi Eye Unit is one department in Kabgayi Hospital located in Muhanga District. Kabgayi hospital is a Catholic hospital (Catholic diocese of Kabgayi), and works in partnership with the Rwandan Ministry of Health. The eye unit officially started in 1993, thanks to collaboration between Kabgayi Diocese and CBM. The eye unit really started functioning well since 2002 when the first full time ophthalmologist arrived. Between 1996 and 2001, every year between and outpatients were consulted. Between 2008 and 2011, the yearly amount of consultations had increased to (including outreach consultations) and from 2012 up to 2016. Eye surgeries increased from 170 surgeries in to 4181 in 2011, and from 3,917 in 2012 to 6,049 in 2021. Currently an estimate of 80% of all eye surgeries are perfomed by the Kabgayi Team
