PARENTGUIDE BDA was first conceived by me, Gwendolyn de la Chevotiere Creary, LLP, LMSW, in 2008 having been inspired by the television program “Super Nanny”. Years ago, as I planned my career trajectory, I became interested in human development and what was required to optimize developmental outcomes. Having been nurtured in an amniotic environment of inter-generational adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) myself, I also became fascinated with understanding how and why people became mentally ill. My counselling career began as a therapist for people that suffered from chronic mental illnesses and developmental challenges. After a few years, I was introduced to a fascinating new field, Infant Mental Health, and as a result my training and career took a slightly different path. My interest in human development merged with my chosen career of assisting the mentally ill. I have had a 25-year career here in Bermuda providing parent guidance and support, discipline strategies, as well as day-care and teacher consultation to hundreds of families with children from birth to 4/5 years old. It is my firm belief that the best outcomes for children occur within the context of the parent-child relationship. I am excited that my ‘baby’ is now being birthed, albeit 10 years later and look forward to your contribution to its growth and development. What is an infant and early childhood mental health consultant/or consultation (IECMHC)? An IECMHC is a mental health professional who partners with parents, day-care providers, teachers, and other early childhood professionals to improve the social, emotional and behavioural health of children in the home, child care or early education programs. IECMHC builds capacity in all care givers to understand the influence their relationships and interactions have on young children’s development thereby improving children’s well-being and preventing physical and mental health problems.
