Museum Development South East
MD South East is funded by Arts Council England to deliver museum development activity in the north of England from 1st April 2024 until 31st March 2026. We are managed by a partnership between Norfolk Museum Service & Brighton & Hove Museums, building on our track record of delivering regional museum development. Our team is based across the South East. They provide advice and support, deliver training and small grants programmes, and create opportunities for museums to connect with each other. National Tramway Museum
The Tramway Museum Society (TMS) is a group of like -minded people who are interested in the preservation of trams and the promotion of tramway history to the public, because trams at one time were the principal, if not the only, form of urban transport and no-one else appeared to be saving any for posterity. The Society was founded in 1955, and after several years of hard work, its members had converted a disused quarry, located to the north of the village of Crich in Derbyshire, on the edge of the Peak District, into the fledgling Crich Tramway Museum. The Society became a registered charity in 1962, and Crich Tramway Museum expanded and grew its collection, eventually becoming the National Tramway Museum in 1980. It is now an Accredited Museum and is home to a world renowned vintage tram fleet, as well as vast collections of photographs and archive materials. The Museum’s collections are one of the most comprehensive collections of trams and tramway history in the world. All the Museum’s collections are Designated as being of National importance and at the core of the collection is the Tramcar fleet which comprises over 70 historic vehicles. Based at Crich Tramway Village, it has become a seasonal attraction with over visitors a year between March and October

Cumbria's Museum Of Military Life
Located within the walls of historic Carlisle Castle, Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life tells the story of the county’s Regimental history from 1702, through two World Wars, to present day. The Museum’s principal collection includes items associated with the 34th and 55th Regiments of Foot, The Border Regiment, King’s Own Royal Border Regiment, and The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment (Kings, Lancashire and Border). This rich history is told through a wealth of objects and enhanced by excellent audio-visual displays. Come and see the French Drum Major’s Mace captured by Sergeant Moses Simpson in 1811, learn how Sergeant Edward Mott was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1917, see the message in a bottle thrown overboard just before the D-Day landings in 1944, find out about Lance Corporal Ashley Irving’s near miss in Afghanistan in 2009, and hear more of the stories of ‘ordinary people doing extraordinary things’.

Shoemakers Museum opens in Summer 2025. The first Clarks factory opened 200 years ago in Street- A place of innovation, creativity and activism. From its Quaker origins in Somerset to its influence around the globe. The Shoemakers of Street have made a lasting mark on the world. Shoemakers Museum will make the collections of The Alfred Gillett Trust available for the public to experience. In addition to the galleries exploring the making of place, shoes, buying and selling of shoes, a cafe, shop and education spaces are being created for visitors to enjoy. The museum aims to share and celebrate Somerset’s shoemaking heritage.

The Women's Art Collection
The Women’s Art Collection is Europe’s largest collection of art by women. It includes 600 works by leading artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Paula Rego, Lubaina Himid, Faith Ringgold, Tracey Emin and Cindy Sherman. Founded in the early 1990s, the Collection challenges the underrepresentation of women artists in museums and galleries. The Collection is displayed throughout Murray Edwards College, an iconic Brutalist building designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon as a manifesto for women’s education. Works of art are hung in public rooms and student corridors and sculptures are part of the College’s famous natural gardens. In 2018, the Collection was granted Museum Accreditation by Arts Council England. Today, we continue to celebrate and support women artists, giving them visibility and a voice. We stage two exhibitions a year, alongside a dynamic programme of events including talks, tours, workshops, screenings and performances. The Collection is open to the public daily from 10am–6pm and is free to visit.

Endangered Material Knowledge Programme
The Endangered Material Knowledge Programme gives grants to support the documentation of material knowledge systems that are under threat and in danger of disappearing. It also provides free access by stewarding that knowledge in an open-access digital repository dedicated to its preservation. Knowledge holders, practitioners, and scholars can apply for funds to support work that explores knowledge systems associated with the making, use, repair and re-purposing of material objects, spaces, architecture, performances and environments. EMKP strongly advocates for a working approach that centres on community epistemologies, close collaborative working and celebration of the diverse knowledge networks that affect the material world. The Programme was established in 2018 with funding from Arcadia and is hosted by the Department of Africa, Oceania and the Americas at the British Museum.
