The Hattiesburg American was founded in 1897 as a weekly newspaper known as the Hattiesburg Progress. In 1907, it was acquired by and became The Hattiesburg Daily News. Because of the U.S.’s entry into World War I, it was renamed the Hattiesburg American in 1917. The Harmon family bought the paper during the 1920s. It was sold to the Hederman family in 1960. The Hederman family kept it for more than 20 years until the Hattiesburg American was acquired by Gannett in 1982. The Longview News-Journal Dates back to 1871 under independent publishers, including James Hogg, later Texas governor, and Carl Estes, Longview civic figure. The publication was purchased by Cox Newspapers in the 1980s and sold by Cox to ASP Westward in 2009. It is closely affiliated with the Marshall News Messenger, another former Cox newspaper (published in nearby Marshall) which was sold to ASP Westward along with the News-Journal. In 2012, ASP Westward announced the sale of the Longview and Marshall papers, along with 12 of its other non-daily East Texas papers, to M. Roberts Media, a family owned media company which is owned by members of the Morris Roberts family. Media critic Ben Bagdikian was quoted saying that there were only 3 great newspapers in the world: Le Monde, The New York Times and The Berkshire Eagle. In May 2016, NENI was purchased by a group of 4 local investors who are committed to making it the finest group of community newspapers in America.
