Tulsa Opera
The spirit, drive and fierce sense of pride of those who made Tulsa boom into an important city also encouraged a rich cultural heritage, leading to the formation of the Tulsa Opera Club on December 1, 1948. As opera gained popularity, so did the organization. In 1951, the directors agreed that the name "Tulsa Opera Club" sounded too amateurish to be taken seriously. On April 21, the organization became "Tulsa Opera Incorporated," as it is still officially known. Tulsa Opera presented light operas and operettas twice yearly until November, 1955 when a major milestone was reached. With its presentation of Madama Butterfly, featuring imported professional singers for all principal roles, Tulsa Opera successfully transitioned to grand opera and made a giant step toward national prominence. Today, Tulsa Opera, the 18th oldest opera company in North America, produces three grand operas each season, and has been named one of America’s top 10 favorite regional opera companies by Opera News. Mainstage productions are held at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. Tulsa Youth Opera, inaugurated in 1997, is part of Tulsa Opera’s extensive educational programs. Tulsa Opera is a member of OPERA America. Performances and education programs are provided to the greater Tulsa area, with additional programs provided for adults and children statewide. Tulsa Opera draws its audiences from the region that includes Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Texas. Tulsa Opera is fortunate to have almost 700 dedicated volunteers and a Board of Directors is currently comprised of 55 men and women who represent various businesses and organizations in Oklahoma. They have a passion or appreciation of the arts as well as a dedication to the betterment of Oklahoma. All volunteers work in conjunction with a professional staff to sponsor and coordinate activities ranging from the Tulsa Opera Chorus, and fundraising events that involve Board, Guild, and additional community volunteers.

United Palace
The history of the United Palace began in 1930, when it was then one of five Loew’s “Wonder Theatres” across the boroughs and New Jersey. Designed by noted architect Thomas Lamb (Cort Theatre, the former Ziegfeld Theatre) with interiors overseen by decorative specialist Harold Rambusch (Waldorf Astoria, Radio City Music Hall), it was one of the region’s premier vaudeville and movie houses. The theater’s first 40 years as a home for engaging storytelling came to an equally storied end in 1969 with a screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey — a fitting and wondrous final chapter for the Wonder Theatre. Yet while many of the city’s grand movie theaters were slated for demolition, the United Palace of Spiritual Arts (formerly known as United Christian Evangelistic Association) purchased the building to house its congregation. Nearly 90 years since it first opened its doors, the United Palace is still an inclusive spiritual center. United Palace honors the building’s legacy through concerts, multimedia productions, movie screenings, and spiritual programming. With nearly 3,400 seats, the United Palace is Manhattan’s fourth largest theater. Yet with its indescribable fusion of decorative styles, symbolic motifs, and international elements, the United Palace is as distinct, diverse, and magical as the city it calls home. The United Palace was designated as a landmarked building in 2016.

Young Playwrights' Theater
YPT was founded by award-winning playwright, Karen Zacarías in 1995. After earning an MFA in playwriting, Karen returned to her hometown of Washington, DC. Seeking to use her art to impact her community, she began to teach playwriting workshops in DC Public Schools. Karen knew the impact creative writing could have on a young person’s sense of empowerment from her own childhood experiences of using storytelling to cope with bullying by humanizing her bullies and imagining different endings to their interactions. Seeing how playwriting had a positive impact on students’ literacy skills, sense of empathy, and personal self-image, Karen was inspired to expand her work, incorporating YPT as a nonprofit in 1997. Since launching our programming in one classroom in 1995, YPT has grown steadily over the last 25 years to serve more than young people ages 8-24 and audience members in all eight wards of Washington, DC, and areas of Northern Virginia and Maryland annually. YPT’s work is now supported by a full-time staff of eight, a part-time staff of two, and a roster of more than 50 professional teaching artists, actors, and theater artists who serve our young people, our schools, our partners, and their communities each year. Our work has expanded to include programs that serve elementary, middle, and high students during and after the school day and during summer, as well as college-level programs serving young people up to age 24. In 2014, YPT launched Silence is Violence, our annual social justice performance series that highlights our young people’s lived experiences and hopes for the future around issues of oppression that impact their community. In recognition of the strength of YPT’s work in our community, we were awarded the 2010 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award from the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, the highest national award for organizations like ours.
