Canada Research Chair In Shared Decision Making And Knowledge Translation

Promoting Shared Decision-Making in Healthcare In recent years, new diagnostic tools and treatment options have become readily available. Similarly, users' access to healthcare-related information has grown exponentially. As a result, healthcare professionals are required to play the new role of "decision brokers", and patients are being asked to participate in decisions which affect their health. These factors are transforming the decision-making process in healthcare. In clinical settings, shared decision-making is the process in which both patients and physicians participate in making medical decisions. True shared decision-making is based on the best available scientific data and highlights the risks and benefits of all available options, including the option of taking no action. Also, shared decision-making takes patients' values and preferences into account. These characteristics allow the shared decision-making model to meet public expectations, suiting situations where options and outcomes are uncertain, as well as positively impacting patients on an individual level. Despite its benefits, the practice of shared decision-making is far from being a widely adopted practice. Research by France Légaré, Canada Research Chair in Shared Decision Making and Knowledge Translation, aims at 1) gaining a better understanding of the needs of professionals delivering primary health care and encouraging professionals to practice shared decision-making; 2) developing the tools needed to apply this new professional technique; 3) developing effective strategies for introducing these tools; and 4) assessing the impact of the tools. Professor Légaré's program benefits the medical community and patients alike. It helps support patients in the process of making health-related decisions, harmonizes patients' expectations with the routine practices of Canada's healthcare professionals and, last but not least, improves patient health.

Canadian Association For Prior Learning Assessment

The Canadian Association for Prior Learning Assessment (CAPLA) has been the national voice for prior learning assessment and recognition (PLAR) for many years. CAPLA has been operating since 1994 and was incorporated in 1997 as a non-profit organization. Its members are comprised of adult learners, PLAR practitioners, researchers, unions, businesses, academic institutions, equity groups, occupational bodies, sectors and non-governmental organizations. CAPLA continues to host yearly conferences and workshops on a range of recognition of prior learning (RPL) programs, practices, policies, projects and research with local, provincial/territorial, national and international emphasis. CAPLA's network extends across the country, into the United States and abroad. It has provided the expertise, advocacy and support for the development of PLAR in Canada. The existence of PLAR, the communities understanding and use of it, and adult learners' awareness and access to it are key to removing barriers to recognition, regardless of the end uses of the recognition process. Canadian Frailty Network Cfn

Canadian Frailty Network (CFN; formerly TVN or Technology Evaluation in the Elderly Network) is a not-for-profit organization focused on frailty, originally funded in 2012 by the Government of Canada’s Networks of Centres of Excellence program, and refunded for a second five-year term in 2017. CFN’s mission is to improve the care of older Canadians living with frailty, and support their families and caregivers. We do this by increasing frailty recognition and assessment, by providing evidence for decision making, by training the next generation to care for this vulnerable population, and by catalyzing policy and practice change in health and social care systems to ensure that the needs of this vulnerable population are met. The Centre for Computational Geostatistics (CCG) is a research program at the University of Alberta that operates similar to other industrial affiliates programs and joint industry programs at different universities. The CCG was launched with the vision of becoming a leader in the education of geostatisticians and the delivery of geostatistical tools for modeling heterogeneity and uncertainty. The CCG currently consists of about 40 supporting companies, four full time staff, and about 20 graduate students. The Faculty associated with CCG are committed to placing all inventions in the public domain with preferential access to sponsors. The CCG provides a mechanism for industry to contribute to and sustain geostatistical research and teaching, which is of long term interest to many companies. The CCG is organized and administered by Professors Clayton V. Deutsch and Jeff Boisvert with a focus toward academic objectives. Overarching principles include (1) openness in research,(2) enrichment of the student experience,(3) promotion of the University as a credible academic institution, and (4) in accordance with the University of Alberta vision, inspiration of all CCG affiliated students to outstanding achievements in learning, discovery, and citizenship. We do this through a process known as Enhanced Weathering to capture carbon in various geological and biological reservoirs. Enhanced weathering is a nature-based negative emission approach which accelerates the weathering rate of naturally occurring minerals. We are conducting the R&D to implement the safe and effective application of large-scale Enhanced Weathering technologies to permanently capture and store atmospheric CO2.
