The Institute for Computational Mechanics (LNM) is committed to what can best be described as cutting-edge “application-motivated fundamental research” in a broad range of areas in computational mechanics, with applications spanning all engineering fields and the applied sciences. With a strong basis in a variety of advanced single-field problems (like computational solid, fluid, and transport dynamics), a special focus lies on coupled multifield and multiscale problems (like fluid-structure interaction, contact dynamics, thermo-structure interaction, electro-chemo-mechano-thermo interaction, opto-acoustics, porous media, multiphase transport, etc.). The main applications at the moment are challenging problems in computational biophysics (on sub-cellular and cellular scale), biomedical engineering (like modeling of respiratory and vascular systems, cardiac modeling, cancer growth, musculoskeletal system, etc.), metal additive manufacturing (on all scales, i.e. from powders to piece) and (all-solid-state) batteries. In all these areas, LNM covers the full spectrum from advanced modeling and developing novel computational methods to sophisticated software development and application-oriented simulations on high-performance computing systems. Meanwhile, research activities also include optimization, inverse analysis, uncertainty quantification, machine learning, and experimental work. In collaboration with leading researchers worldwide as well as national and international industrial partners, LNM expedites projects at the front line of research. At the IEII, we investigate the function of immune cells in the context of an intact animal organism. Using advanced methods of optical imaging and innovative experimental systems, we analyze how defined populations of immune cells behave under physiological and pathological conditions. The underlying molecular mechanisms are elucidated. We focus on disease models of fungal and bacterial lung infection as well as sterile inflammation during stroke or tumor growth.

The Chair of Business Administration, Production and Operations Management performs techno-economic analyses of industrial value chains with a focus on risk management, circulatory economic systems, integrated environmental protection measures, production planning and biomass applications. Furthermore the Chair is engaged in production and logistics optimization, supply chain management and closed-loop systems. The Chair of Energy Economics analyses techno-economic questions along the whole energy supply chain, from primary energy supply, over energy conversion and energy transport to energy distribution and energy use. The French-German Institute for Environmental Research (DFIU) was established in 1991 as a research institution with the mandate to sustain the widespread wish of France and Germany for strengthening the cross-border scientific cooperation in the field of environmental research. Institute For Operations And Technology Management
The Institute for Operations and Technology Management (IBT), located at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld of the Trier University of Applied Sciences, offers industrial and commercial services in the fields of energy system technology, production optimization, design automation, and measurement technology. Modern infrastructure and the know-how from different fields guarantee the optimal solution of technical tasks by applied research and development. The interdisciplinary working groups have both technical and organizational in-depth knowledge and experience, which are necessary for a target-oriented and successful implementation of application-oriented research projects. Our research focuses on (regenerative) energy technology and production technology. The connecting link between the two fields is energy efficiency as the interface between production and energy use. Companies and municipalities make use of our expertise in consulting on the use of renewable and highly efficient energy generation plants and model development. We also support our partners in identifying and acquiring funding for the implementation of projects. In addition, we offer students practical training in Bachelor's and Master's degree courses. Companies benefit from our training and further education concepts.
