Nabtaplaya Institute
Located in Germany, the research institute of NabtaPlaya is founded according to the German Federal Law § 52 Abs. 2 Nr. 1 AO with the purpose of the association to promote science and research in the field of Space technology specifically in the analysis of Earth Observation Data. Data Science is at the core of our software innovation research by studying thousands of gigabytes of satellite data. We support basic research in the interest of the general public in the Space related downstream applications. The inspiration of the name 'NabtaPlaya' came from a historical story that relates to our research purposes of today. For thousands of years, ancient societies all around the world erected massive stone circles, aligning them with the sun and stars to mark the seasons. These early calendars foretold the coming of spring, summer, fall and winter, helping civilizations track when to plant and harvest crops. Located in Africa, Nabta Playa stands some 800 kilometers south of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. It was built more than years ago, making Nabta Playa the oldest stone circle in the world — and possibly Earth’s oldest astronomical observatory.

Open Music Europe
OpenMusE brings together music industry stakeholders and researchers from 10 EU countries and Ukraine. Our consortium recognises that placing European music ecosystems on a more competitive, fair, and sustainable footing requires evidence-based policymaking, business planning and accuracy. We provide the data needed for these actions. Using transparent methods and tools, OpenMusE maps the policy as well as the data landscape. The project bridges data gaps and empowers stakeholders and policymakers to take data-driven actions. Our project is grounded on principles of open policy analysis, open science, and open-source software development. We work with stakeholders to identify data gaps on the EU, national, and regional levels; co-create indicators and methods for bridging them; develop free software tools for data collection and analysis; and report our findings and every step taken to reach them. Using the OMO (Open Music Observatory) and our open-source software, music SMEs without technical departments or expertise will be able to access and analyse open data; model volume and value, including of zero-price uses; create better business models; and generate corporate social responsibility and sustainability reports; all at a fraction of current costs. We validate these tools in four pilot studies that will bring concrete benefits to stakeholders within the project lifespan.

Phd Research Training Group Meinbio
MeInBio is a structured PhD program (research training group) at the Medical, Biological and Technical Faculty of the Albert Ludwigs University Freiburg, Germany, and the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics Freiburg, Germany. In MeInBio Life Sciences meet Bioinformatics to understand gene regulation. Currently, 23 PhD students from all over the world work in 13 different research groups - both wet-laboratory and bioinformatics/ statistics groups - to advance the understanding of transcriptional control at high spatial and temporal resolution. Work at the research project is complemented by a specific qualification program like workshops, soft skills trainings and meet-ups. MeInBio is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and aims at creating excellent conditions for PhD education and networking. All participating groups employ high-throughput sequencing approaches and high-resolution technology. Professional bioinformatics analysis of high-throughput sequencing data is currently both a quantitative and qualitative bottleneck in many laboratories. MeInBio hence aims to train PhD researchers in both wet-laboratory and bioinformatics approaches to overcome this shortage. Core of the concept is the creation of interdisciplinary research tandems to provide opportunity for wet-laboratory PhD researchers to gain a deeper understanding of bioinformatics know-how by joining a bioinformatics group. Bioinformatics PhD researchers in turn will gain knowledge about the molecular approaches used to generate big data sets. The structured training program of the RTG therefore specialises the PhD researchers for the specific demands of a growing job market, which needs combined bioinformatics and laboratory experience.

Planadapt
PlanAdapt is a global network-based organisation that provides knowledge services in support of economically just, socially inclusive and effective climate adaptation around the world. PlanAdapt approaches complex challenges through transdisciplinary mixed methods and engagement of doers and thinkers across the spheres of science, policy and practice. PlanAdapt focuses on a suite of advisory services that enable innovative and effective adaptation to climate impacts and manage climate-related risks. We are a group of ‘thinkers’, that conduct applied research and develop conceptual approaches for adaptation, and ‘doers’ in sectors and contexts where future climate risks matter. This mixture allows us to constantly calibrate our knowledge pool through balancing tacit, experience-based knowledge from our practitioners and explicit knowledge from research and theory. PlanAdapt brokers knowledge between the people, businesses, authorities that identify and feel climate risks and the ones that offer solutions and relevant information. Our mission is to develop and spread ‘good practice’ in climate change adaptation work that will always be inspired by and measured against positive impacts for people that suffer from and lose through the negative effects of climate change. In order to do so, we support public and private actors in effectively integrating climate risks into their strategies, processes and projects in relevant sectors, such as agriculture, forestry, water resource management, coastal protection, human development, energy, infrastructure, health, tourism. Our services are equally informed by science and practice, strongly believing that only a mix of both can solve the practical threats related to climate impacts.

Sparta Projekt
