Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research-(EIAR ) The Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research is one of the oldest and largest agricultural research institutes in Africa. EIAR was established in 1966 by proclamation. It was then called the Institute of Agricultural Research(IAR). In 1997 it was designated the Ethiopian Agricultural Research Organization( EARO ). At the moment, the institute is renamed the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research ( EIAR ). EIAR has made tremendous efforts to build the national capacity of doing agricultural research and produce and introduce improved technologies focusing on fostering agricultural growth and development in the country. Mission EIAR’s mission is to conduct research that will provide market-competitive agricultural technologies that will contribute to increased agricultural productivity and nutrition quality, sustainable food security, economic development, and conservation of the integrity of natural resources and the environment. Nestled in the beautiful town of Bahir Dar at the shore of Lake Tana and the Blue Nile River, Bahir Dar University (BDU) is established by merging two former higher education institutions; namely the Bahir Dar polytechnic and Bahir Dar Teachers’ College which had been established in 1963 and 1972 respectively. Those two HEIs were merged to form Bahir Dar University in G.C. BDU is now among the largest universities in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia with a student population of over 40 thousand in its 340 programs (104 Undergraduate and 225 Postgraduate programs- of which 170 are second degree and 55 are third degree) and 7 Specialty and 4 Certificate programs). It has 1638 academic staff on duty (of whom 278 are with PhD, 1028 are with MA/MSc, 69 with Specialty and Subspecialty and the remaining 266 are with BA/BSc degree). BDU has now 793 academic staff members on study leave. It has 4893 administrative and support staff. The university has now five Colleges, two Faculties, four Institutes, two Schools, two Academies and nine fully functioning campuses. Background The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) is a medical research institute established in 1970 by the Government of Ethiopia in collaboration with Save the Children Organizations of Norway and Sweden, and University of Bergen. It was named after the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). ARHI was initially established to investigate the pathogenesis and human immune responses of leprosy. However, it undertakes medical research in a wide range of diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, antimicrobial resistance, HIV various cancers, and other non-communicable conditions. By the council of Ministers, Regulation Number 530/2023, when AHRI was restructured, in addition to the tasks and responsibilities it had previously, it was mandated to include traditional and modern medicine research and pharmaceutical industry development sectors.
