Nccr Antiresist

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is taking a significant toll on world health. Currently, AMR is directly attributable to over one million deaths every year, a figure estimated to rise to 10 million by 2050. The pipeline for new classes of antimicrobials has run dry for several decades, and urgently needs to be filled. In the light of this situation, Professors Christoph Dehio, Urs Jenal, and Dirk Bumann, three internationally renowned infection biologists, decided to change how research into antibiotic-resistant pathogens was being done. With their work leading to fundamental insights into host-pathogen interaction and bacterial pathogen physiology, they were ideally positioned to transform antimicrobial research and discover new ways to address AMR. Their vision was clear. They wanted to target bacterial vulnerabilities revealed in vivo in the human body, which have never successfully been systematically investigated by drug development programs using traditional laboratory conditions. Their ambitious plan included uniting a multi-disciplinary team across Switzerland to channel expertise across clinical and biological research and engineering, and to translate the in-vivo data from human patients into human tissue-based targeted solutions for accelerating discoveries of innovative antimicrobials, such as novel antibiotic drug classes or phage therapy. They compiled this plan for a new paradigm in antimicrobia research into a proposal submitted to the Swiss National Science Foundation, and in 2020, Phase 1 of the National Centre of Competence in Research AntiResist, began. Since then, NCCR AntiResist has gone from strength to strength. With Prof. Dr. med. Nina Khanna joining as Deputy Director in 2022, and now with 30 research groups across Switzerland and Israel, the collaborative science is paying off. We are now planning the next steps in Phase 2, to build screening platforms for new antimicrobials and lead the way in ending AMR.

The Arab Center For Alternative Planning Acap

The Arab Center for Alternative Planning (ACAP), a non-governmental, non-profit organization located in Eilaboun, Israel (Galilee), was established in December ACAP has developed into a national address that represents the genuine needs and interests of the Arab citizens of Israel on issues of planning, land, housing, and development. In January 2004, ACAP was recognized by the Ministry of the Interior as a public organization with the legal right to intervene in official planning procedures, and file objections to national, district and local plans as an independent legal entity. This was a landmark achievement since ACAP is the first-ever and only Arab organization in Israel that holds recognized official status from the Ministry of Interior as a public organization with the legal right to interfere in official planning procedures, and file objections against any local, regional, or national plan that adversely affects the interests and rights of the Arab minority. ACAP works towards equality and integration of Israel’s Arab citizens into public life activities, while preserving their cultural features and national identity, and closing existing gaps between Jewish and Arab citizens of Israel in various spheres of life, including housing, planning, infrastructure, transportation, social services, education, environment, and employment. ACAP advances these aims and serves the Arab population through a highly professional team of urban planners and other relevant professionals.

The Concern Foundation Laboratories At The Lautenberg Center For Immunology And Cancer Research

The Lautenberg Center has been established in 1968 as the first department of Immunology at the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School. Investigations at the Lautenberg Center range over a spectrum of topics in cellular and biochemical immunology, molecular cell biology and genetics, cancer biology and immunology, the biology of autoimmune and immunodeficiency disorders, immuno-genetics and transplantation immunity. Although the specific research projects differ widely, the Center achieves a high degree of integration of its efforts. This is accomplished by a framework of constant interactions between the individual research teams including weekly formal seminars, informal discussion groups and a journal club, periodic research planning and data analysis meetings between different groups, and frequent policy meetings among the faculty members. One of the highlights of the Center’s activity is the annual three day retreat where the Center’s research workers present their current studies for critical group evaluation, as well as other scheduled occasions for a steady exchange of ideas and information. The Center stands at the hub of an international network of scientific endeavors. Many of its graduate students and post-doctoral fellows come from abroad. Senior scientists from other institutions are constant visitors of the Center, presenting lectures and participating for various periods of time in its research program. The Center’s scientists are involved in collaborative research efforts with colleagues at Hadassah Medical Center, other hospitals and leading universities and research centers in Israel and other parts of the world. The Center’s members organize symposia, workshops and advanced training courses in Israel and abroad.
