Eu Marie-Curie Action Itn-Etn Athor
Refractories are heat-resistant materials used as inner linings of high temperature furnaces, reactors and processing units. ATHOR (Advanced THermomechanical multiscale mOdelling of Refractory linings) is an innovative, collaborative and interdisciplinary project that brings together 15 early stage researchers, 7 academic beneficiaries and 8 private partners. This 4-year European Training Network (ETN) program started in October 2017 as a Marie-Sklodowska-Curie action (Innovative Training Network – ITN). The ATHOR network is firstly dedicated to train researchers in multi engineering required fields for a better understanding of thermomechanical behaviour of refractory linings used in I&S applications. The project will cover all the main features of thermomechanical analysis of refractory linings including material characterization, impact of corrosion on thermomechanical properties, thermal shock resistance, modelling of non-linear thermomechanical behaviours, instrumentation of industrial devices and measurement in operation conditions. The 15 ESRs recruited will take advantage of the most sophisticated numerical tools to model, design and predict the life of different lining configurations in critical operational conditions. Being trained in scientific, technical and soft skills, these ESRs are the next generation of highly employable scientists and engineers in the refractory sector and related areas. The main scientific objective of the ATHOR network is to adapt and develop the most advanced modelling strategies and experimental technologies to the field of refractory to be able to perform reliable computations and measurement in the temperature range of the applications of these materials. ATHOR targets the development of high-end engineering technologies in the fields of material’s science and numerical simulations to give a substantial contribution through the design of more robust and reliable refractory linings.

TrANsMIT is a COST Action focused on the techno-economic analysis (TEA) of the overall, integrated CO2 Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) value chain. We aim to bring together academia, research institutes and industry into a cutting-edge, pan-European knowledge network. The Action advances the research frontier of CCUS TEA from partially unharmonized and disciplinary research to harmonized, holistic pan- European, coordinated research on the full CCUS system, facilitating development of the most technologically, economically and commercially feasible CCUS technologies and systems. We will achieve this by harmonizing and coordinating the methods and tools used for CCUS TEA in Europe, leveraging the knowledge created by our partners in national or international research projects. We focus on holistic assessment of the CCUS chain, and on those areas where most development is needed. The created science will be an essential means to steer CCUS R&D and deployment in a direction that allows reaching climate targets on-time and in a cost-effective manner, while harnessing the competitiveness of European industry. TrANsMIT has have a strong focus on knowledge sharing and career development, tackling existing disparities in knowledge distribution and career opportunities. We will foster strong collaboration between the more and the less research-intensive countries in Europe, improving the access of the latter to State-of-the-Art science and new research projects. Our leadership roles are taken by early-career researchers and minorities, helping to fast-track their career development. At TrANsMIT, we aspire to lead to top-tier techno-economic analysis of CCUS systems across European countries.

Vertical Axis Wind Technologies
Vertical Axis Wind Technologies is dedicated to developing a new innovative technology for first vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) in large scale (over 500kW) which is substantially more effective in energy production terms compared to currently widely used technology of horizontal axis wind turbines and at the same time is durable and reliable. The concept has been heavily tested using computational fluid dynamics models (over 4500 simulations) and proves to work meeting expectations and assumptions. Lab scale model has been developed and sub-scale model is due to be completed by the end of 2018. The analyses and simulations confirmed 30% more energy production per year compared to similar horizontal axis wind turbine under same wind conditions. Investment and operational costs reduced compared to horizontal axis wind turbines. Social and environmental impact highly reduced. The technology is patent pending and has been already awarded "Polish investments of the future" first prize by the Polish Ministry of Investment and Economic Development.
