International Society For Rock Mechanics And Rock Engineering Isrm
The International Society for Rock Mechanics was founded in Salzburg in 1962 as a result of the enlargement of the "Salzburger Kreis". Its foundation is mainly owed to Prof. Leopold Müller who acted as President of the Society till September 1966. The field of Rock Mechanics is taken to include all studies relative to the physical and mechanical behaviour of rocks and rock masses and the applications of this knowledge for the better understanding of geological processes and in the fields of Engineering (ISRM Statutes). The main objectives and purposes of the Society are- to encourage international collaboration and exchange of ideas and information between Rock Mechanics practitioners- to encourage teaching, research, and advancement of knowledge in Rock Mechanics- to promote high standards of professional practice among rock engineers so that civil, mining and petroleum engineering works might be safer, more economic and less disruptive to the environment. The ISRM is a non-profit scientific association supported by the fees of the members and grants that do not impair its free action. The ISRM Secretariat has been headquartered in Lisbon, Portugal, at the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering - LNEC since 1966, date of the first ISRM Congress, when Prof. Manuel Rocha was elected as President of the Society.

Okeanos - Institute Of Marine Sciences
Okeanos activities are directed to scientific research and education on the ecology, ecosystem functioning, and ecosystem based management of open ocean and deep-water marine ecosystems, including seamounts, hydrothermal vents, mid-ocean ridges, abyssal plains, and the pelagic and mesopelagic realms, with a special focus on the Atlantic Ocean but with extensions to other ocean basins. Most biology and ecology research have targeted key deep-sea and pelagic taxa, including benthic invertebrates (e.g. cold-water corals and sponges), soft-bodied animals, fishes and vulnerable megafauna (e.g. cetaceans, seabirds, sea-turtles and sharks). Ecosystem functioning studies have focused in understanding the transfer of energy from chemosynthetic communities to background ecosystems, the main drivers of seamount productivity, and aspects related to the benthopelagic coupling or the two-ways energy transfer between the deep-sea and the open ocean. Okeanos has contributed profoundly, and will keep contributing, to the sustainable management of the oceans at the local, national, European, and international levels though a dedicated agenda which promotes the transfer of scientific knowledge to governmental and private organizations, and to the society. Okeanos has also paid special attention improving ocean literacy and environmental awareness. This long-term goal of has been achieved by establishing links with local schools, organizing public seminars, and partnering with national and international media (e.g. BBC, NGM) to produce documentaries, TV and radio shows.

Although young in the face of its counterparts in Europe, it has been serving as a forum for ideas and lively discussions within the framework of the conferences, workshops and debates it has promoted or supported, and in the various initiatives it has been carrying out. Since its founding, SPECO has seen its membership grow in a way that clearly demonstrates the scientific and technical community's commitment and reflects the vitality with which it has promoted different activities. In 2018, SPECO exceeded 600 associates.
