Southern California Coastal Water Research Project
The Southern California Coastal Water Research Project (SCCWRP) is a public R&D agency that develops and applies next-generation science to improve management of aquatic systems in Southern California and beyond. Since its founding in 1969, SCCWRP has been developing strategies, tools and technologies that the region’s water-quality management community relies on to more effectively protect and enhance the ecological health of Southern California’s coastal ocean and watersheds. SCCWRP’s reputation is built on conducting scientific research and translating it into actionable guidance and recommendations that inform management decision-making and policy development. SCCWRP science has served as the basis for discharge permits and watershed basin plans, runoff requirements for new development and redevelopment, biological objectives for aquatic life, sediment quality criteria, and microbial contamination standards for beach ocean water. SCCWRP also plays a key role in developing and facilitating long-term regional monitoring programs, promoting stewardship and sharing of environmental data, and informing regional planning efforts and regulatory compliance strategies. Through the SCCWRP Commission governing board, SCCWRP works to build scientific consensus and unify its 14 member agencies and other environmental organizations around best-practices approaches for improving management of aquatic systems. Eight of SCCWRP’s member agencies are Southern California-based organizations that manage the discharge of treated wastewater effluent and land-based runoff into aquatic systems; the other six member agencies are water-quality regulatory organizations that oversee the activities of the dischargers. SCCWRP’s 14 member agencies collectively represent the preeminent group of organizations responsible for protecting Southern California’s coastal ocean and the watersheds that drain to it.

Ui Labs
MxD enables U.S. manufacturers to begin making every part better than the last. It is a goal far too big for any one company to solve on its own. It requires production lines to be embedded with software and sensors, and hooked up to the cloud. Only with this ability to send and receive data can the equipment improve itself and learn from every part produced in real-time. The most lucrative opportunities of the future will involve digitally powered manufacturing. Innovative manufacturers turn to us to forge that future. MxD was formerly known as the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII).

Unc Nutrition Research Institute
The UNC Nutrition Research Institute (NRI) is leading the development of individualized nutrition. Part of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the NRI is located in Kannapolis, NC. Scientists at the NRI seek to discover why people differ in their metabolism and nutritional requirements and to use this understanding to ensure optimal health through individualized nutrition (precision nutrition). Just as precision medicine is the next frontier in medical treatment, precision nutrition holds great potential to enhance our ability to prevent, delay the onset, or mitigate the progression of disease and to improve health outcomes. We aim to enhance understanding of health and human development through greater knowledge of how genetic, epigenetic, microbiome and metabolic mechanisms affect a person’s requirements for and responses to nutrition. Our guiding scientific premise is that each of us is metabolically unique. The NRI is dedicated to answering the question of how these differences affect an individual’s health, and, in so doing, update the current, but outdated, paradigm of a singular dietary guideline with specific nutritional recommendations and actions by which an individual can improve his or her health and quality of life. The NRI seeks to become a global leader in precision nutrition through the following goals:(1) to advance the science of individualized nutrition by performing cutting-edge research,(2) to educate and train future generations of nutrition researchers,(3) to translate nutrition research findings for the general public and (4) to support regional economic redevelopment.

Alcor Life Extension Foundation
In 1972, Alcor was incorporated as the Alcor Society for Solid State Hypothermia in the State of California by Fred and Linda Chamberlain.(The name was changed to Alcor Life Extension Foundation in 1977.) The nonprofit organization was conceived as a rational, technology-oriented cryonics organization that would be managed on a fiscally conservative basis by a self perpetuating Board. Alcor advertised in direct mailings and offered seminars in order to attract members and bring attention to the cryonics movement. On July 16, 1976, Alcor performed its first human cryopreservation. At this time, Alcor’s office consisted of a mobile surgical unit in a large van. Trans Time, Inc, a cryonics organization in the San Francisco Bay Area, provided long-term patient storage until Alcor began doing its own storage in 1982. By 1990 Alcor had grown to 300 members. In response to concerns that the California facility was too small and vulnerable to earthquake risk, the organization purchased a building in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1993 and moved its patients to it in 1994. In 1997, after a substantial effort led by then-president Steve Bridge, Alcor formed the Patient Care Trust as an entirely separate entity to manage and protect the funding for cryopatients. Alcor remains the only cryonics organization to segregate and protect patient funding in this way. Alcor currently has around members and 117 patients.
