Project 30
Project 30# is a social entrepreneurship enterprise that develops innovative solutions and programmes for social and economic development. The entity was founded in 2014, with key aim to provide capacity building support to small medium and micro enterprises (SMME’s), nonprofit organisations (NPOs), and community based organisations (CBOs). Particularly those operating in communities and areas that are marginalised and vulnerable– including but is not limited to, rural areas, peri-urban areas, and urban poor enclaves. The formation of Project 30# was spurred on by the challenges and limitations that the teams identified among organisations operating in rural & marginalised areas. Challenges such as information and coordination deficit; insufficient organisational and business management skills; lack of financial and organisational sustainability as well as operational capacity. Over the years billions of Rands have been poured out by various government departments, private sector funds and other philanthropic as well as entrepreneurship programmes into establishing social enterprises and social programmes development. However, the rate at which SMMEs and programmes grow (become profitable, or stabilise) is far less than the rate at which funding is thrown into programmes. With so many ailing SMMEs and social development programmes, training and skills development as well as administrational support remain a key concern for funders. Jointly, Project 30# possesses over 5 years of business management training and facilitation, strategy and business development, as well as research, campaigns management and programme development – and is therefore adequately positioned to fill this market gap.

Safety And Violence Initiative Savi
Scholars at UCT have been working on issues relating to safety and violence for decades, but collaborative research across disciplines was infrequent. In late 2009, in response to an appeal for proposals within UCT, Associate Professor Cathy Ward of the Department of Psychology consulted with scholars and researchers from across the campus and then proposed the establishment of SaVI. A series of meetings and workshops were held to determine the vision, mission and focus of SaVI, with a Steering Committee being created in 2010. SaVI made its public debut on 1 April 2011, and is one of four multi-disciplinary strategic ventures at UCT. The Initiative covers one of the national priorities – crime and violence – identified by the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Max Price, when he was first appointed. These were areas of interest and concern – along with poverty, climate change and education – he wanted to turn into key research drives at the university. The Safety and Violence Initiative (SaVI) facilitates debate, research and interventions across the university with a focus on understanding and responding to violence, and promoting safety. The initiative brings together scholars from a number of departments, centres and units across UCT.

Dst-Nrf Centre Of Excellence In Strong Materials Coe-Sm
Established in June 2004, the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Strong Materials (CoE-SM) is a research network which enables researchers to collaborate across disciplines and institutions, both locally and abroad. The CoE-SM is funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the National Research Foundation (NRF). The CoE-SM has been undertaking research at seven South African universities and two Science Councils, and is hosted by the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). These include The University of the Witwatersrand, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan and Rhodes Universities, and the Universities of Johannesburg, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and Stellenbosch as well as the Science Councils, Mintek and the National Energy Corporation of South Africa (NECSA). The CoE-SM focuses research on a wide range of strong materials, where the various institutions have specific expertise. Strong Materials are materials which retain their distinctive properties under extreme conditions and have established or potential commercial applications. They are necessary in many components and make a strong contribution to the economy of South Africa. The current Focus Area groups within the CoE-SM are: •Carbides and Cermets: Manufacturing, testing and characterisation of mainly WC, VC, CrC and TiC sintered alloys and coatings. •Carbon Nanotubes and Strong Composites: Carbon nanotubes (among the strongest and stiffest structures ever made) are being studied for potential chemical and mechanical applications. •Ceramic Materials: Multi-component, ultrahard-phase (Diamond, Cubic Boron Nitride and others) containing composites for cutting tools and wear parts. •Diamond, Thin Hard Films and Related Materials: Laser-based methods are used to measure stresses, elastic and structural properties, and to study defects in materials. Security Institute For Governance And Leadership In Africa
The Security Institute for Governance and Leadership in Africa (SIGLA) stems from the HOPE Project of the late Professor Russel Botman, a previous Rector and VC of Stellenbosch University. SIGLA envisages to position itself as one of the leading African leadership institutions and strives to build leadership capacity and generate knowledge resources in the areas of security for sustainable development. SIGLA recognises that without governance and leadership neither security nor development may be sustained. SIGLA's research activities relating to leadership and governance on the African continent focus upon landward and maritime governance matters. Our goal is to offer a neutral academic space within a top African university. To this end, Stellenbosch University serves as a credible knowledge partner that appeals to researchers from across Africa to work with international associates towards quality outputs on leadership, landward and maritime security governance. As of late cyber security governance now also forms part of the SIGLA focus. SIGLA's research capacity is largely virtual in kind. Stellenbosch University appoints researchers as Research Fellows and Extraordinary Professors or -Lecturers to work within research fields for set periods of time and according to a programme coordinated by SIGLA. To this end we house an international team of researchers on leadership and security governance with a dedicated Africa focus. We cooperate with like-minded partners from Africa and beyond on leadership, landward and maritime security governance. Our activities include co-organising workshops and conferences, lecturing/briefing series on agreed-upon themes, co-designing and offering of short course programmes accredited with Stellenbosch University, and research projects.
