Stories: The Victorian Adolescent Health Cohort Study (VAHCS) is a landmark longitudinal study spanning nearly years. The project began in 1992, when a group of around Year 9 students (14-15 years of age) were selected to participate. Our participants completed six interviews at school age (from Years 9 - 12), and three interviews in young adulthood (aged around 21, 24 and 29). Thanks to the support of our dedicated participants, we also completed our tenth round of interviews as our participants turned 35. We are now interviewing our participants for an 11th time in their early forties to better understand how mental health and behaviours in adolescence impact on mid-life. The first six surveys alone created one of the most comprehensive pictures of adolescent development to date. We looked at many aspects of teenage health and behaviour, including mental health, personality and behaviour, school, family, and drug and alcohol use. This information has been used to improve the health of future generations by influencing policy and informing prevention programs. More recently, we have focused on how teenage experiences, health and lifestyles may affect physical and emotional health in adulthood and in the next generation. Our findings have helped bring global attention to the important role of adolescence in shaping future health.

Child Cancer Research Foundation
For over thirty years the Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation (Inc) has been raising funds for research into childhood cancers. Australia has one of the highest incidences of childhood cancer worldwide. One in 500 Australian children will develop a cancer before 15 years of age – that’s 600 Australian children diagnosed every year. Childhood cancer is the single greatest cause of death from disease in Australian children, with three children losing their lives to cancer every week. In Australia, childhood cancer is second only to breast cancer in terms of the number of years of life lost by the disease. The quest to find cures for childhood cancer is one of medicine’s greatest success stories. Fifty years ago only two percent of children with cancer survived. Medical research alone has improved overall survival rates to 80 percent. With childhood cancer still the leading cause of death from disease in Australian children, there is more work to be done. There are still particular childhood cancers – such as brain tumours and neuroblastoma – with survival rates as low as 50 percent. CLCRF has a commitment to ensure this ground-breaking research continues so that the future generations will be the ones to live cancer free. The Foundation relies on the generous support of the community to continue its vital research, as we do not receive State or Federal funding.

Crc For Spatial Information Now Frontiersi
The Australia and New Zealand Cooperative Research Centre for Spatial Information (CRCSI) was established under the Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Program in 2003. The CRC Program is an Australian Government Initiative. The CRC for Spatial Information is no longer receiving Commonwealth funding and is no longer part of the CRC Program. For 15 years we brought the best people together to solve the most complex spatial problems. With our partners we transformed research outcomes into meaningful change. We influenced new public data access policies and contributed to major national and international initiatives. From agriculture and defence, to health, climate change and the built environment, we realised tangible benefits for our partners. Between 2010–2024 our research impact will exceed $875m. Our partners included federal and state government agencies, universities and over 50 companies. During our lifetime the CRCSI and its partners invested more than $160 million (cash and in-kind) to Australian and New Zeland R&D. Our achievements were recognised internationally. Our ambitious program of work addressed market failures and supported critical spatial infrastructure in Australia and New Zealand so that essential government delivery services run more effectively, giving substantial productivity gains in health, energy provision, agriculture, defence and urban planning; so that we are equipped to adapt to and deal with climate change impacts and to ensure Australian and New Zealand industry and end-user capacity building is enhanced.

WSU’s Humanitarian and Development Research Initiative (HADRI) has been established with a globally unique approach to pursue research that highlights the complexity of international responses to conflicts and disasters, and the intersections between the multidimensional health, socio-economic and political aspects of complex emergencies. Our Mission is to conduct research that:(1) Bridges the academic and practice aspects of humanitarian response, rehabilitation and development.(2) Informs policy decisions of government, international organisations, academics and other stakeholders.(3) Ensures synergies, innovation and knowledge sharing and translation through collaboration with HADRI’s global partners, and engagement with WSU’s undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Humanitarian and Development Studies (HADS).
