Leslie Lab

The Leslie Lab is working at the interface of physics and biology with a particular interest in quantifying the dynamics of individual molecules. Our research provides insights into the biophysical properties of molecules, cells, and relevant therapeutics with the ultimate goal of propelling quantitative health sciences. We develop single-molecule and single-cell imaging/analysis tools, as well as mathematical models of molecular interactions, to help guide the rational design of new therapeutic molecules and delivery vehicles. These discoveries will elucidate the process of how molecules search for and bind to a target and perform their therapeutic function in a complex living environment, with a particular focus on nucleic acid interactions and advancing genetic medicines. Current projects include: understanding the biophysics of nucleic acid hybridization, understanding the mechanisms of antisense oligonucleotides, protein-protein interactions, and single-molecule activity in whole cells. The Milk and Micronutrient Assessment Lab (MAMA Lab) is run by Dr. Kyly Whitfield and her team in the Department of Applied Human Nutrition at Mount Saint Vincent University. Dr. Whitfield is passionate about nutrition in the first days, from conception to two years, and her research program aims to explore both the ‘what’ and ‘how’ of feeding during this time. The core group of MAMA Lab researchers reside within the Department of Applied Human Nutrition at Mount Saint Vincent University, but we have collaborators across Atlantic Canada and around the globe. Major research partners include researchers from Helen Keller International, Acadia University, the University of Prince Edward Island, the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute, to name just a few.

The NanoMedicines Innovation Network (NMIN) is advancing “smart” medicines to cure disease by delivering small molecule drugs more specifically to disease sites and enabling the clinical use of gene therapies. NMIN brings investigators from universities across Canada—a multidisciplinary collective of physicists, engineers, chemists, biochemists, cell biologists, disease specialists, and clinicians—together with companies and not-for-profit research and granting institutions to expand and improve Canada’s position as world leader in nanomedicines R&D. NMIN invests in projects aimed at developing new therapeutics and diagnostics. Particular efforts are made to conduct projects partnered with industry to ensure market impact.
