Beyond The Helm
There is nothing – absolutely nothing.…… half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats” Ratty from “The Wind in the Willows” by Kenneth Grahame To say that boating has been my passion is a bit of an understatement…… It’s more like an obsession. I was fortunate to grow up on the water; If I wasn’t in school, my family was traveling extensively by water either on our own boats or by charter. From as early as I can remember, I’ve always been completely captivated with boats in general, the beauty, design, functionality, etc. I absolutely love the lifestyle and can’t imagine not being on the water or being on boats. As a kid, I was kind of a dock rat on the lake we lived on. I would peruse the marinas in my 9.9 horse powered Jon Boat. Wandering around the coves where boaters would be congregated showing off their yachts, I was less interested in what they were doing onboard, but more enthralled in the lines of the boats themselves. Then, I would spend the day sneaking around the “Private” docks studying all the yachts I would continue to lust over today. So, for me, after a successful career in real estate and entrepreneurship honing my skill sets in representing buyers and sellers of luxury resort properties and owning my own businesses, it was only natural in my mid-life epiphany to transfer these skill sets and pursue my dream job of being in the marine industry. Outside of the boating world, I’m an adventure junkie, an avid traveler, and a wanderlust who dreams of traveling the globe over water. For now though, I’m still navigating the waters of raising my two beautiful children, preparing them for life and discouraging them from growing up too fast for as long as possible.and I still love nothing better than walking the docks!

University Of Michigan Electric Boat
The University of Michigan Electric Boat (UMEB) team is an entirely student-led project team seeking to develop the next generation of engineers through leadership and sustainable technologies. Each year our team designs, builds, and races an electric-powered boat to compete and represent the University of Michigan on the national stage at our collegiate competition, Promoting Electric Propulsion (PEP), and professional events, such as the Lake of the Ozarks (LOTO) Shootout. UMEB is also competing on the world stage as we attempt to set new limits in electric straight line speed and circle track records. In 2020, during our first year competing in the Promoting Electric Propulsion college event, our team placed 2nd overall. We iterated on the original design until spring 2023, and then we shifted gears to go after world water speed records with a new boat design. During summer 2024, UMEB unveiled our next generation electric race boat, TiDE, at the Boyne Thunder Poker Run, and also showcased the project to much larger crowds at the 2024 LOTO Shootout. In spring 2025, we took TiDE down to Mercury Racing's test facility, Lake X, in Florida where we made significant progress towards our first water test. Then about a month later, we made our first successful water test back in Michigan with TiDE. In subsequent testing, we made good progress, but had a mechanical failure with our motors. However, we worked the entire summer to get new motors and were able to integrate them a week before the 2025 LOTO Shootout at the end of summer 2025. We competed and won the electric class at this event, becoming the first college team to ever compete and win in the Shootout's 37 year history. Now in fall 2025, we are designing a brand new electric D-Stock hydroplane to return to PEP for the first time since 2023, and are in the early design phase of our next record breaking project, which will be optimized for both straight line speed and circle track records.
