Manawatu Rugby Union
Manawatu Rugby Football Union (MRU) is the governing body of the sport of Rugby union in the Manawatu province. The Union is based in the city of Palmerston North though its catchment area includes players and clubs from nearby towns in the province, including Ashhurst, Feilding, Rongotea, Linton, Bulls, Pahiatua, Woodville and Dannevirke. Founded in 1886, Manawatu is one of New Zealand's oldest rugby unions. In 1892, the MRU, amongst other Rugby Unions, was instrumental in the founding of the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU). The Manawatu Rugby Union has over players, making it the tenth largest union in New Zealand in terms of player numbers. In 2011, the union celebrated its 125th Jubilee. The Manawatu Turbos are the premier men's team in the Manawatu rugby province. In 2005, Manawatu were invited to play in the first division of a restructured National Provincial Championship, initially called (for sponsorship purposes) the Air New Zealand Cup (now known as the Mitre 10 Cup). As well as propelling Manawatu into professional rugby, it was also the first time since 1988 the top grade competition would feature a team from the province.

The Tasman Rugby Union was officially formed in December 2005 as an amalgamation of the Nelson Bays and Marlborough rugby unions. This was done primarily to field a team - the Tasman Mako - in New Zealand's premier provincial rugby competition in 2006 (now the Mitre 10 Cup). In the late 1980’s the Papakura District Council originally purchased the Park land. In a unique structure the Trust has leased the park from the Council to provide the improvements and amenities. The Trust’s philosophy being that everyone in the community irrespective of age, gender, physical ability or nationality can use the facilities and services provided, for recreation, leisure or sporting pursuits. The Trust will continue to build the best facilities that we can whether they be buildings such as the Netball Centre, Gymsport and Recreation Centre, Team Sports Facility, sporting grounds such as the Cricket Ovals or walkways through a scented garden for the blind. The Park will also always be maintained to a high standard and utilised fully. The Trust is looking forward to the future of our community and the Park is an investment for future generations of the Papakura and Counties Manukau region.
