Background
About A. Gaye
I grew up in Senegal and completed my undergraduate studies (BSc Biotechnology) at the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences (Mannheim, Germany). I then moved to the United Kingdom where I obtained an MSc in Bioinformatics (Department of Biochemistry, University of Leicester) and a PhD in Genetic Epidemiology, under the supervision of Prof Paul R. Burton and Prof Martin D. Tobin, at the department of health sciences of the University of Leicester. After moving to the University of Bristol I completed a Postdoc in Genetic Epidemiology and Data Science at the school of social and community medicine. I spent my early research career (doctoral and post-doctoral work) developing analytical tools used in large collaborative projects such as the Biobank Standardisation and Harmonisation for Research Excellence in the European Union (BioSHaRE) and the Canadian-based Public Population Project in Genomics and Society (P3G). Those methodological works provided me with a good understanding of the concepts underpinning the statistical methods used in genetic/genomic studies. The knowledge and skills gained during that period along with my computational background proved invaluable in my current position at the National Institutes of Health (USA) where I investigate the effects of genetic, environmental and social determinants on cardiovascular disease mortality and morbidity. My experience working in large consortia coupled with my interdisciplinary training and proficiency in five languages (English, French, Fulani, German, Wolof) enables me to interact and collaborate with colleagues from various backgrounds and fields of research.
