About Aaron Brown

Aaron Brown is an associate professor at Colorado State University In the Department of Systems Engineering. He has a Ph.D. in Civil Systems Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a certificate in Sustainable Community Development and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He has focused much of his work in the areas of Appropriate Design, Humanitarian Engineering, Sustainable Systems and Humanitarian Technology. He has developed curriculum and research in these topics and also established a humanitarian engineering projects that engage students in service-learning engineering activities that benefit vulnerable communities. Dr. Brown has worked all over the globe in such locations as the Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, India, China, Peru, and Nepal. Dr. Brown’s work has been featured on National Public Radio (NPR), Scientific American, the Denver Post and earned him the title "Community Game Changer of the Month" from CBS Denver. He has received recognition from the US State Department as a “visionary partner”. He also nominated for the Carnegie U.S. Professor of the Year award and the Presidential Award for STEM mentoring and was the recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr Peace Award. Previous to his academic career Aaron Brown primarily worked in the aerospace industry as a mechanical designer on such projects as the landing Mechanism for the Mars Curiosity Mission, and mechanism design for the Hubble robotics mission.
