About Aaron Fleming
I am trained in the chemical biology of DNA and RNA with a keen focus on the bioorganic chemistry of oxidative stress and toxicology. My efforts have recently led to the following scientific discoveries. • Developed and implemented a next-generation sequencing protocol to sequence for the oxidatively modified DNA base 8- oxoguanine in the mammalian genome. • Demonstrated the modified DNA base 8-oxoguanine regulates transcription when located in a gene promoter in human cells. • Identified, characterized, and validated new drug targets in the Zika viral genome. The complete results of my work have furnished >60 peer-reviewed publications, 12 posters and 6 talks at international conferences, as well as 3 patents. Beyond chemical and biological research, I am passionate about educating future scientists from high school through the postdoctoral scholar levels from diverse international communities. My enthusiasm for teaching has been noticed for which I am the recipient of 2 teaching awards. I was raised in a family-owned business providing me with the perspective of working hard to achieve big-picture goals. My background in tandem with books like The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman has driven my interests in globalization and how it impacts the way our world is changing and how business is changing. Outside the lab, I enjoy running leisurely and competitively as a member of relay teams, reading, exploring the outdoors, and perfecting my yoga poses.
