About Aaron Newcome

I have spent the past eight years of my career as a public educator. The first five of those years were spent in the public school district of Bridgeport, Connecticut. I came to Bridgeport as a member of the 2010 Teach for America corps, and the purposeful work I completed there compelled me to stay beyond my original commitment of two years. Starting in the alternative education program, I worked to provide my students with the intellectual and emotional security many of them so desperately needed. While there I gained invaluable experience with guided reading strategies. Many of my students, though in 7th and 8th grade, were reading at the 5th grade level or below. Structuring reading experiences was vital in growing their fluency, comprehension, and competence. My last year in Bridgeport was spent as a 9th and 11th grade teacher at Central High School, one of the three traditional high schools in the district. There, I was fortunate enough to have access to a class set of chromebooks, which allowed me to utilize Google applications in making a paperless classroom. Detached from pen and paper and able to easily share and access documents through multiple devices, I was able to instill within my students necessary skills of revision and editing. For the past three years at the high school in Port Chester New York, I have honed my collaborative skills teaching all three years in co-taught settings and serving on the Summer Reading, Grammar Integration and Vocabulary Exploration, Inquiry, and Curriculum Revision committees. I have also had the unique experience of crafting and implementing a film production and analysis curriculum for a film elective course. This is in addition to serving as the advisor for multiple after school clubs and organizations. I am looking for a position where I can be involved in purposeful work, be a part of a passionate and knowledgeable team, and serve under supervisors who will help me grow.
