Background
About Aaron van Acker
My name is Aaron Van Acker, and I hold a Master of Architecture from KU Leuven (Campus Sint-Lucas Ghent). From the start of my studies, I developed a strong interest in timber construction and circular design strategies—two themes that have consistently guided my academic and professional journey. This passion culminated in my master’s thesis,"CLT Construction in Flanders: Unknown is Unloved," where I explored the structural capabilities and circular potential of cross-laminated timber (CLT) in the Flemish context. Through a combination of theoretical research and design experimentation, I highlighted both the opportunities and challenges of CLT as a sustainable alternative to conventional materials like concrete and steel. Professionally, I gained experience at BEEL Architects and WE-S Architects in Ghent, contributing to a wide range of projects, from masterplans to residential and public buildings. These experiences strengthened my belief that architecture plays a crucial role in addressing ecological and societal challenges—and that timber, when used correctly, can be key to that transition. Currently, I am pursuing a PhD at the Department of Architecture (ArcK) at Hasselt University, focusing on solid timber construction with an emphasis on circularity, environmental impact, and disassembly. My research is particularly oriented toward innovative connection systems, prefabrication, and design strategies that enable reuse and efficient material use. I aim to bridge academic research and architectural practice, contributing to a building culture where timber is not only ecologically sustainable but also economically viable. Together with the research team, I look forward to developing new perspectives on circular timber architecture.
