About Abbie Williams

I am currently volunteering with the National Trust and Swansea Council to survey two areas in the Gower for Hazel dormice, using footprint tunnels, nest tubes and nest boxes. I also volunteer with the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, where I have helped with woodland and habitat management, maintenance work and other practical work on the reserves. Particularly, removing invasive species such as Himalayan Balsam and Rhododendron to allow other plants to grow and balance the ecosystem, and planting important plants such as Hawthorn. I have relevant experience in other wildlife surveys: in June 2024 I volunteered with Wildlife Sense in Kefalonia, Greece, through Flooglebinder. Assisting in the conservation of Loggerhead sea turtles, I conducted wildlife surveys, including: • Snorkel surveys - using timers and GoPro footage to capture the density and abundance of seagrass in the meadows of the bays around Kefalonia • Harbour surveys - recording Loggerhead sea turtle behaviour in the harbours • Nesting surveys - looking for turtle nests and recording data, including tracks of potential nesting sites with photographic evidence. As well as this, during my current University course I have conducted field, hedgerow and pond surveys and written follow-up reports. I also have relevant experience in visitor engagement and public-facing roles through my role as Walkthrough Attendant at Manor Wildlife Park, Tenby. I would engage with hundreds of visitors daily throughout the summer holidays, talking about the animals, answering questions and ensuring visitor and animal safety. I was responsible for caring for the animals, including feeding, cleaning and monitoring their behaviour. Additionally, I assisted with general maintenance of the park including minor repairs, cleaning signs/windows, weeding, cutting back branches, litter-picking. This role significantly enhanced my public interaction skills and physical endurance, and provided me with a wealth of skills in outdoor work. Currently I am looking for opportunities to gain further experience in conservation and outdoor wildlife management.
