About Abe Janis

Abe Janis has worked in regenerative medicine, medical device, and advanced wound care industry R&D for over twenty years. He held early roles in laser thrombolysis for stroke & biomaterials at the Oregon Medical Laser Center and extracellular matrix-derived biomaterials at Cook Biotech. Abe then led R&D on percutaneous implants at a series of Alfred Mann founded start-ups in Los Angeles prior to leading the research team at ACell. In 2013, he co-founded a DoD-funded research program in regenerative medicine at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Currently, Abe is a Principal Scientist in Technology Development for ostomy skin biology and leads the futurism strategic foresight program and the industry/academic innovation ecosystem program at Hollister Incorporated in Libertyville, IL. He received his M.S. in Biology from Portland State University and a B.S. in General Science from the University of Oregon. Abe has extensive experience in biomedical and medical device R&D, preclinical models, and clinical research. He has been awarded funding by the National Space Biomedical Research Institute and the Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research Program. He has been granted over 20 patents and has authored over 80 presentations and manuscripts in a wide range of specialties, including biomaterials, extracellular matrix derived scaffolds, implantology, and advanced wound care. Abe serves as Mentor in Residence at MATTER, the Chicago healthcare innovator community and as a technical advisor for New Harvest, the non-profit research institute building the field of cellular agriculture. He recently served as a 2019-2020 TEDMED Research Scholar.
