About Abu Sumon

With over twenty years of progressively responsible work experience, I have played an important role in taking forward the climate change policy reforms in Bangladesh and globally. My expertise includes a wide spectrum of development and management issues, including climate change adaptation and finance, disaster risk reduction, and ecosystem-based wetland natural resources management and conservation. I have led the formulation and adoption process of Climate Fiscal Framework and a Local Climate Financing Framework, Climate Public Finance Tracking Methodology integrated into the Integrated Budget and Accounting System, globally known as IFMIS. I have also conducted several research and studies to identify entry points for climate inclusion in TAX, VAT, Subsidy, Pricing and lending policies. Since mid 2022, I have been working with the Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS) of the University of Saskatchewan as the Associate Programme Manager to oversee the Bangladesh strategic partnership programme to facilitate technology transfer and scientific programmes. Very recently, GIFS has offered the technical and logistical support to establish the Bangabandhu-Pierre Elliott Trudeau Agriculture Technology Centre inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Recently, I have completed the National Adaptation Plan formulation in multiple developing and small island countries for UNDP. My singular contribution in the integration of climate change dimensions in the national and sectoral budget setting process was appreciated by the governments. I have been preparing the National Climate Budget Report which is being presented before the Bangladesh’s national parliament regularly since 2017. I am an alumna of Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, Brown University, Rhode Island, USA. I have a Masters in Spatial Planning from the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden and completed my undergraduate studies from the from Urban and Rural Planning Discipline, Khulna University. My latest area of interest is in the climate, land-use, energy and water systems (CLEWs) modelling tools for simultaneous consideration of food, energy and water security.
