About Adam Cook

My passion is to explore, analyze, and share the diverse and complex expressions of film and media across different genres, platforms, and cultures — whether through public engagement and programming, in the classroom, or through my own critical practice. Currently, I am researching film aesthetics and criticism at Queen's University as a PhD Candidate in Screen Cultures and Curatorial Studies. As an instructor, I have designed & taught courses on film & media history and theory within Queen's as well as at other institutions. I also work in moving image archiving & restoration as a Research Associate for the Vulnerable Media Lab. My experience and skills as a researcher extend beyond film and I have contributed to McGill University’s TRaCE Transborder, a global project on PhD trajectories in the Humanities. With over fifteen years of experience as a film critic, I have written for various publications, including Cinema Scope, Film Comment, Sight & Sound, Cineaste, The Globe and Mail and The New York Times. As a film curator, I have worked on the programming teams of film festivals such as the Vancouver International Film Festival, Hot Docs, and the Toronto International Film Festival in addition to independent curatorial programmes in North America and Europe.
