About Adam Rush

I am currently working as a Part 1 Architectural Assistant at S+SA Architects. I have previously worked as a part 1 assistant for 6 months. Then traveled around Asia. For my final Undergraduate project, I designed a hydroponics school, which both was a learning space and a production facility. In addition, I designed an accommodation building where some of the students could stay. The building is a grid shell roof structure with CLT floors and glulam columns. The grid shell roof meant the 2nd floor was an adaptable production space. The main building also recycled rainwater to be used on the hydroponic crops and a pond for water runoff- was used for the accommodation roof. I also strive to use sustainable materials and design. I specify materials such as CLT, glulam, limecrete, recycled aged zinc and charred timber cladding. This gives a lower carbon footprint and in the case of limecrete even absorbs CO2. In addition, the building is more comfortable and has a warm feel because of the natural materials. I also choose the exterior cladding based on its durability making sure the building will look great in the decades to come building. I achieved a 1st in my dissertation where I studied floating architecture. I chose this topic because I think it will make a positive difference to the built environment in the next few decades as sea levels are rising and more land is at risk of flooding. I also found that living on the water had benefited people's lives and they enjoyed the sense of community and adventure that comes with these floating communities as well. I have also designed a housing complex in the centre of Newcastle Upon Tyne- giving examples of how rooms can be changed to add an office, bedroom, or shop. I also have experience in an architectural office and on-site. I gained valuable information about how architectural practices operate and the duties of a project architect on site. This also helped me to gain knowledge of the design changes that are needed in a retrofit. Additionally, I achieved a Triple Distinction Star in a Level 3 BTEC in Construction and the Built Environment. This course was taught by industry professionals. I completed four design projects both new buildings and a change of use retrofit. In addition, I gained knowledge of a wide variety of construction fields such as structural engineering, building regulations, quality surveying building surveying, further mathematics etc.
