Background

About Adele Crozier

Adele is the International Development Sector Lead at the Bureau of Meteorology. The International Development Program supports implementation of the Australian Government's foreign policy objectives and delivers social and economic value to Australia and partner governments in the Indo-Pacific region. As International Development Sector Lead, Adele is responsible for understanding the challenges faced by National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) in the Indo-Pacific and developing supplemental and capacity building solutions which underpin stability, security, economic growth and prosperity in region. As a geoscientist Adele undertook field-based research in New Zealand, Italy, South America, Iceland, Indonesia, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. Adele has ten years of experience designing and leading humanitarian aid funded capacity development programs for the Australian Government across the Asia-Pacific region initially in geo-hazards (with an emphasis on preparing state volcano observatories to assist vulnerable communities impacted by volcanic eruptions) and more recently in operational meteorology (with an emphasis on preparing National Hydrological and Meteorological Services to meet the needs of the Transport sector). Adele has demonstrated skills in numerical modelling (volcanic ash, landslide and tsunami), Geographical Information Systems (GIS), satellite remote sensing techniques, project management and strategic planning. She has led technical teams of physical scientists, scientific programmers and engineers tasked with innovating new approaches to natural hazard and risk analysis at multiple spatial scales (e.g. the United Nations Global Assessment of Risk (GAR2015)). Adele joined the Australian Bureau of Meteorology in 2016 and led a multi-disciplinary team of meteorologists, geologists and geophysicists at the Bureau's Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) that utilise satellite remote sensing techniques and natural hazard modelling tools to detect, monitor and forecast the movement of volcanic ash from eruptions in the Asia-Pacific. In 2021, as a Natural Hazard Solutions Lead, Adele was responsible for understanding the challenges faced by emergency management agencies (e.g, floods, fires, thunderstorm asthma) and developing solutions that supported Australians dealing with the harsh realities of their natural environment.
