Background
About Adrian Ramirez
I began my career as a 6th grade English teacher at an inner-city middle school in Corpus Christi, Texas. After one year teaching 6th grade, I taught English for 2 years in 8th grade at the same school. After that, I went to work for Windham School District, the school system within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. For 8 years, I taught General Educational Development (GED), college preparation, and parenting courses to adult offenders in the prison system. During my last 3 years with Windham School District, I worked in an administrative capacity as an intake counselor assessing and supporting offenders' educational needs; administering GED testing; and providing oversight of the computer maintenance, computer-aided drafting, and puppy programs. After 11 years with Windham School District, I served as a high school assistant principal with Edgewood Independent School District for 4 years and as a high school vice principal for 5 years. My main duties included managing and coordinating student attendance and behavior efforts, evaluating and training staff, and ensuring a safe and optimal learning environment for all. Upon completion of my 9th year with Edgewood ISD, I went to work for Southwest ISD as a middle school principal (grades 6-8). As a result of our work, our campus achieved a "met standard" rating after previously being designated an "improvement required" campus prior to my arrival. After working as a middle school principal, I became principal of the Disciplinary Alternative Education Placement Program and Boot Camp Program in the same district. I led a team that worked to identify root causes of challenging student behaviors and began implementing a trauma-informed approach to supporting students. After two years, I was asked to lead an elementary school in the same district. I worked during the summer to prepare the elementary school for the new school year but left at the start of the new year after accepting a promotion in the same district as an Executive Director of Administration and Pupil Services. For the past 5 years, I have led a variety of programs: student registrations, withdrawals, and leavers; student behavior; student attendance; trauma-informed care, social emotional learning and mental health; homeless youth; student data and information systems; teen parenting; and youth in foster care. I have led a team of more than 20 members, served as division trainer, managed our district's complaint process for students and parents, and ensured compliance with local polices and state and federal laws.
