About Adrian Sewell

I am an experienced UK and European patent attorney with an automotive engineering background. Before entering the patent profession, I enjoyed over five years working in the automotive industry as a senior development engineer for the likes of Jaguar Cars (now JLR) where I became professionally registered as a Chartered mechanical engineer (CEng). After fulfilling a dream of driving a Land Rover across Europe and Africa in 2004, I joined a large international patent and trade mark firm where I became dual-qualified as a Chartered (UK) patent attorney and a European patent attorney in 2009 and 2010 respectively. In 2012, I joined a smaller UK practice to continue working as a senior patent attorney, before establishing Tandem Patents in 2016. I enjoy working with a wide variety of engineering and manufacturing clients, particularly established SMEs, and have many years’ experience supporting in-house legal counsel with, for example, patent drafting and prosecution work. I also advise on validity and infringement matters and have prepared numerous validity and infringement opinions in relation to granted UK and European patents and registered designs. I have attended examination and opposition proceedings at the European Patent Office in The Hague and Munich, and have also prepared and filed a number of successful third party observations against competitor patent applications. I also carry out detailed due diligence of IP assets before and after corporate acquisitions. My first-hand experience of the automotive industry and, in particular, working within a team of professional design and development engineers, importantly helps me to efficiently engage with, and fully understand, fellow engineers when discussing engineering and patent-related matters. In turn, this tandem of engineering and legal experience enables me to become a valuable addition to the engineering teams I work with and advise.
